Week 6 – pre-calc 11 – solving quadratic equations

This week in math, we focused on solving quadratic equations using our previously learnt skill of factoring! This taught us how to find solutions and verify those answers.

Solving quadratic equations with factoring looks something like this… you must always have an equals sign for an equation!:

x^2 + 15x + 56 = 0

This would factor into —> (x + 7)(x + 8) = 0

Having this equation now, we would replace the x with whatever equals to 0. So for (x + 7), we would want our x to equal -7. Therefore this equation would be:

(-7 + 7)(-8 + 8) = 0

Now that we have this we know…

x1 = -7, x2 = -8.

Now we can simply go back and insert these into the x spots to verify!

My biggest mistake ‘s this week were always made when we had to find solutions with variables in the factoring, so the solutions weren’t perfect, but were fractions. This is factors such as (2 – 5x) = 0.

To find this we have to do some simple algebra.

2 – 5x = 0

-2                 -2

-5x = -2

-5x/-5 = -2/-5

now that the -5 has been canceled out, we can go simplify!

x = 2/5

Mid-term self assessment – Chemistry 11

My reflections on our units:

Atomic theory:
I think that my strength in this unit was probably naming and identifying compounds. It was the simplest part to understand and it was the concept that I practiced the most. It was one of our first lessons and I remember practicing it with my sister.
My weakness during this unit was probably identifying the different kinds of chemical reactions. I could never memorize the names or how they happened/what they reacted to.
This is the test I’m planning on retaking when we have the choice. I feel that if I studied for this, this is the unit I could easily understand. When the time comes, I’m going to look back at the very first notes and try to work on memorizing chemical reactions.

Bonding:
My strength during bonding was probably drawing and classifying the different bonds and diagrams. I honestly really enjoyed and understood this unit. It was my best. I really liked drawing the different types of bonds, and I found that the ratios were easy to remember.
My weakness during the bonding unit was probably identifying when to use double, triple, etc. bonds. When it was any atom other than hydrogen I didn’t know what kind of double bonds were necessary. I also did not know the exceptions for the atoms that broke the octet rule.
If i were ever to retake this test, those are the two little things I would study and try to understand, however I’m happy with the mark I got for this unit.

The Mole:
I think for my strength during this unit I would have to choose my memorization. After one class, I memorized the avogadro number, the STP number, the SATP number, and when to use them. I think that I also understood pretty well how to convert with moles.
My weakness was probably most conversions to do with mass and volume. When it came to moles, molecules and atoms it was pretty straightforward, but the mass and volume conversions confused me, especially when we weren’t given units for mass.
I’m planning on doing extra work and whatever studying I can do for our next unit so that my mark for the mole test goes up. I wouldn’t retake the mole test because I don’t know if it would do very much for me.

Digital Footprint

Question 1 – How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least 2 examples.

  • Digital footprints can affect a bunch of your future opportunities, as no matter how hard you try, you can never really get rid of everything. For example – said person might have done something bad in the past- illegal or just reputation damaging in general, most colleges/universities check applicants’ digital footprints, to see if there’s something that could affect the school’s community, or anything damaging. If you aren’t careful with what you put online the consequences could result in missing out on further educational opportunities. Same thing with job applications – when you apply for these sorts of things, the people that look for a good fit in their company want to know everything that they can about you. If you have a record of any kind, or again, something bad online it could affect your chances of getting a job.

Question 2 – Describe at least 3 strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

  • To keep your digital footprint safe, firstly, a VPN could play a big part. A VPN could keep your information, and yourself safe, and it would trip off anyone that tries to get inside your accounts, or digital footprint to ruin your future opportunities. Secondly, be aware of yourself, and what you choose to share or post online. If you think about something before posting it, then the chances of having something bad or embarrassing on your record in the future are slimmer. And lastly, distance yourself from people that act suspicious, or people who seem unfriendly – look out for red flags for anyone you may be talking to online, or just limit talking to people online in general, unless necessary, for example, if you’re selling something, or you’re looking for a recipe or address.

Question 3 – How could social media be used in a positive manner?

  • There are quite a few ways that social media could be used positively. You could use your platform – big or small – to spread awareness about things going on in the world, you could post petitions to change things for the better, you could share words of kindness, etc.! Or, you could start a small business to make some money – for yourself, or to help your family or friends out. Or, you could just use your platform to promote yourself, and try to achieve your dreams, like, posting your art, or your music, maybe your singing, your poems, anything!
