Simple and Compound sentences

What is a simple sentence? What is a complex sentence? In this video we will be covering these topics and more! We discuss FANBOYS, conjunctions, semicolons and have included some practice questions for you to try.

Simple sentences:

A simple sentence consists of a subject and a predicate. Ex. The celery ran away. In this sentence: Subject: The celery, Predicate: ran away. So what is a subject and a predicate? A subject is the topic of the sentence. Example: The celery ran away. The subject is the “celery” because it is what the sentence is about. A predicate is the description of what is happening to the subject. Example: The celery ran away.”Running away” is what the celery is doing, so it is the predicate because it provides  context to the subject. Here is some more examples of simple sentences: The carrot was covered in dirt. The carrot is the subject.”Covered in dirt” is the predicate.  Another example: Ellece baked pumpkin pie.Ellece is the subject.”Baked pumpkin pie” is the predicate.

Compound sentences:

A compound sentence consists of  two simple sentences connected with a conjunction. Ex. The celery ran away, but the guinea pigs caught it. Predicate: ran away, caught it  Subject: The celery, the guinea pigsConjunction: But

Don’t forget: Add a comma before the conjunction!

What is a conjunction?

A conjunction is a word used to connect sentences or to coordinate words. This is where we apply FANBOYS. FANBOYS is an abbreviation for: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So. FANBOYS are used to connect two simple sentences to form a compound sentence. Example: Think of a sandwich, the two slices of bread are simple sentences, the filling is a CONJUNCTION. A compound sentence is  now formed.

Sentences examples:

Compound Sentence example: I baked cookies, but they were too hot to eat. A compound sentence with a semi colon, combines two independent ideas together. Ex. She did not like the cake; It was too sweet.Idea #1) She did not like the cake.  Idea #2) It was too  sweet.

The semicolon:

A semi colon is a form of punctuation that is used to join to independent ideas or statements that are related to each other together. Ex.  I love Mexican food; Tacos are my favourite. Idea #1) I love Mexican food. Idea#2) Tacos are my favourite.

In conclusion:

This is how we form simple and compound sentences.

  1. Thank you for submitting your Grammar Video Project for COL. I have reviewed your Edublog post, and have the following observations regarding your work:

    – Concept is well-explained in a creative method with the food theme
    – Video is fairly well edited, however, the introduction of you opening the PPT and starting it could have been trimmed
    – Format is lacking in the video embedding on blog posts (text, transitions, effects, etc.)

    Thanks for sharing this project!
