A mountain journey- Questions

1. What was Dave Conroy doing out in the wilderness? (motivation)

Conroy was a trapper who set out to get animal furs for a market back in town.
2. At what point does the reader know the protagonist is in serious trouble and not likely to
make it to MacMoran’s cabin? (plot)

The moment after Dave fell in the airhole and he didn’t stop to warm up, was when the reader was starting to see that Dave wasn’t going to make it. After that we started to see him slowly getting weaker and seeing hallucinations.
3 .. What three critical mistakes did Conroy make? What are some of the things he could
have done to prevent himself from freezing? (plot)

The three critical mistakes he made were not stopping at the spruce tree at the beginning to rest, not stopping to make a fire after falling into the air hole and lastly, not stopping at Hoodoo creek to warm up. If he was a bit more patient and decided to not feed his ego, he might have had a bigger chance of survival.
4. Determine the elements of plot in this story: exposition, complicating incident, 3 crises,
climax, and the denouement.

In the exposition, the author gives the reader’s a brief overview of who Dave Conroy is and the situation he is in, the author also, explains what Dave Conroy is feeling by writing, “driven by a gnawing fear of
death …” The complicating incident was when he didn’t spend the night under the spruce tree, if he would have stayed one more night under the tree none of those things would have happened. The first crises was when Dave Conroy fell through the airhole and got wet, making his journey harder. The second crises is when the cabin where he was supposed to stay in was burned to the ground. At this point Conroy’s limbs are frozen preventing him from starting a fire. The third crises was when Dave died. The climax here is when he fell in the airhole, that’s when the action in the novel started. The denouement is when he falls asleep before he dies.

The setting was a snowy forest with a lot of tree’s and I am assuming it’s sometime in the fur trade era. The setting affects a lot of what happens in the story, Conroy had no way to call someone for help and even though the weather was a big factor contributing to his death, I feel like it was mostly his fault. The theme in this story is that you shouldn’t let your pride take over you. If Dave would have payed attention to other people’s past experiences and rested for a while he could have made it but, he was too impatient and prideful to wait. When you are in a life or death situation, there isn’t time to feed your ego.
