Chemistry 11 Midterm Self-Assessment and Goal Setting

Content

The first unit that we learned was atomic theory. I enjoyed this unit, because we got to learn a lot about the elements and how they react with one another. However, while we did this unit, I discovered one of my weaknesses, which is memorizing vocabulary. The more we used the vocabulary, the easier it became to understand, but even then, there were some terms that I didn’t fully understand. A strength that I had however, was with Bohr Diagrams and creating compounds/molecules. I think I enjoyed this part the most, because it reminded me of grade 9 and 10 science, where chemistry was always my favourite unit.

The second unit was bonding, which seemed to go by very fast. A weakness I encountered with bonding was polar, non-polar, and ionic bonds. Its a skill that took me a while to learn, but that I still feel I could use today. Knowing when the arrows cancelled out is also a skill that I have not quite mastered. However, I did really enjoy drawing the Lewis Diagram molecules and problem solving where the bonds should go to make sure I’m using the right number of electrons.

The third unit is moles. I really like using moles, because it’s a process that makes a lot of sense once you understand it. My weakness in this unit is that I struggle with knowing what number I should use to decide how many significant figures my answer should have. But, I think I’m getting really good at deciding what the conversion process is to find what the question is asking. I hope I continue to understand the unit well as we near the unit test, and that I nail down how many significant figures my answer is to.

End of Semester Reflection:

The goal that I have accomplished is practicing the things that I do not know. I always complete the worksheets that we are given, and make sure that I understand the answer and the process to get there before moving on. I would say that I am also still working towards this goal, as we have one more test before the end of this class. In preparation for this test, I will be practicing the things that I don’t understand and therefore, will be completing the goal. I have learned a lot about time management in this class, by using my class time to study wisely, and the goal I will continue working on is to make this work ethic transfer into my other classes.
