Week 1, Feb 14, 2024, journal setup
I started setting up my edublog.
Week #, Date, Title
Minimum of 3 photos. Additional media like video or audio is optional
Vocabulary word that pertains to the work done in this subject this week, including a definition, and detail of how it pertains to the work done.
Reflection that includes a strength, stretch and goal in relation to one of the core competencies.
How is this Animal threatened? The main reason that this animal is being threatened is because of poaching. Rhino horns are on high demand on the illegal international market.
What are some solutions to this problem?
-stricter policies for poaching and exploiting animal products
–Create more jobs like wildlife officers to help.
–Promote projects like planting trees and plants so these animals can have more resources.
Feb 15, starting project
I finished setting up my edublog page, and started selecting an endangered animal.
Core Competency – Creative Thinking, generating ideas
A strength: Researching about my animal on google and websites provided
A stretch: Picking my animal out of all the options
A growth: Experimenting with cardboard and cutting out different shapes
Vocabulary Word: RHINO
The vocabulary word I chose was rhino because during this week I learned a lot about rhinos. I learnt that the black, Javan and Sumatran rhinos are critically endangered. Northern white rhinos are also near threatened, as only 2 female ones are living under constant protection from poachers. Along with that, at least 561 rhino’s are illegally poached a year, with South Africa having the most amount of rhino’s compared to any other place in earth.
Feb 16, printing, tracing & cutting
I found 3 different pictures of my animal and printed out a side view. I then traced it with a seperate piece of paper and cut out templates for when I begin the cardboard part.
Week 2, Feb 20
I took a break from my project and did activities with Ms Tee.
Feb 21
Before working on my project, we did a creative drawing activity with Ms Tee. After I finished, I began cutting out the shapes of my rhino on cardboard.
Feb 22
With Ms. Tee, we used play doh to recreate the animal on our cards.
Week 3, Feb 26
I made more progress cutting out parts of my rhino on my cardboard.
Feb 28
We did fun activities with Ms. Tee and drew thumbnails with different point of views for our animal.
Feb 29
I continued wrapping my rhino in paper maché.
Core Competency – Critical Thinking, develop and design
A strength: Problem solving because I made my rhino’s horn too small, so I changed the design.
A stretch: Leaving the paper maché too moist before putting it on my rhino.
A growth: Next time I will use less paper maché paste when dipping my pieces of newspaper in.
Vocabulary Word: PAPER MACHÉ
This week, I chose the word Paper Maché as my vocabulary word. Paper maché is a composite or waste material that consists of a paste/pulp and pieces of paper. To make paper maché, you add 2 cups of flour to 1 cup of water. Stir the mixture until the paste forms and tear pieces of newspaper to dip inside.
Week 4, March 1
I spent the whole class doing Ms. Tee’s single word story activity and created a before and after book.
2) How is this Life on Land (ANIMAL) threatened? See the list provided on the Life on Land Website.
The rhino is threatened by poachers and trafficking by humans.
3) What are the solutions to the problems of this threat?
– Stricter laws around animal artifacts and projects
– Stricter laws around buying and selling exotic pets
– More wildlife officers
March 7
Today we had a shortened block, so we made a dictionary with Ms. Tee
Core Competency – Connect and engage with other
A strength: Communicating doing group activities with my group.
A stretch: Asking for help and guidance when I need it.
A growth: Ask for help so I can begin the paper clay portion.
Vocabulary Word: Thumbnail
The word I chose was Thumbnail because it is used to represent the different angles and point of views of your art piece.
Week 5, March 12
Today I continued working on paper clay and developing the structure of my rhino.
March 14
I finished the paper clay process and I am moving onto joint compound tomorrow.
Core Competency – Generating ideas
A strength: Thinking of ideas to progress with my project
A stretch:
A growth:
Vocabulary Word: JOINT COMPOUND
I chose joint compound because I am using it for the outer layer of my project before I paint it. Joint compound is a compound made of gypsum, clay, and latex resin.
Week 6, April 3
I did an activity with Ms. Tee, finished the joint compound portion of my rhino sculpture, and began my inquiry project. I sketched my 4 thumbnails to capture the different point of views of my creature.
April 11
Core Competency – Self-determination
A strength: Being persistent during my project
A stretch: Participating in morning activities
A growth:
Vocabulary Word: ACRYLIC PAINT
I chose the word Acrylic paint as my vocabulary word because this week I’ve mainly been focusing on painting my endangered animal.
April 23
I finished my 3D animal.
My artist statement
There are currently only thousands of rhinos remaining in African nations, making them one of the most endangered animals in the world. Poachers kill them or abandon them for their horns to sell on illegal international markets. These are very valuable to vendors and are the main cause of their demise. Because they are massive grazers that contribute to the formation of the landscape and the maintenance of an ecosystem’s delicate balance, rhinos are vital to the natural world. By keeping the threatened species in a protected captivity and shielding them from poachers, we can contribute to the survival of rhinos all over the world.
Week 7, May 2
I finished painting my brush slug and re-done the thumbnails.
May 13
Made a short story called The Vampire Love Story.
Week 8 May 27
I finished my wall decal project.
Week 9 June 12
I started my inquiry project and my character mug.
June 13
I glazed my mug and added paper mache to my inquiry project.
Inquiry Term-Long Project
Make a journal entry on your page where you cover the sections highlighted in blue. This is your proposal, and will count as the PURPOSE of your project. This is a PORTFOLIO item, that will showcase your learning.
What would you like to investigate/make as a term-long project?
3D Demogorgan painting from the Stranger Things.
Choose a project. To begin this might be a loose idea. Research your idea. Find at least 3 inspiring photos of something similar (so you can help explain your project to your peers, and to Mx. Vittie).
What do you need to get started?
Canvas, paper mache, acrylic paint, pencil, tin foil, masking tape,
Work out the purpose of your project. Why do you want to make this. What have others done before in this material or with this idea? Write at least 3 sentences about this.
I want to make this because I think this character in the series is really cool. Instead of just a drawing, I decided to incorporate the 3D part and add clay to the top to add more detail and effect. I found the general idea of adding clay on top of a canvas on Pinterest, and thought of what creature I wanted to make it.
How will you begin the project?
I will start this project by first sketching a light, detailed sketch of my creature on a medium canvas. After that, I will line it with foil. I use paper mache, then lastly paint it.
What challenges might you face in completing your goal? Any ideas on how you might solve them, or resources you could use to help yourself? Write at least 2 sentences about this.
A challenge I could face would be having troubles To overcome this, I could ask for help from my more experienced friends who have used paper mache for a long time. Another problem would be having trouble getting the right colors for my creature, as the Demogorgan has very dull, sandy colors. To get past this, I can mix paint colors together and again, ask my more experienced peers for assistance.
Finished product
Title of work: The Demogorgan
Medium: Canvas, tin foil, masking tape, paper mache paste, newspaper, acrylic paint, acrylic gloss
Date: June 20, 2024
Artist name: Amber Cheung
Short artist statement
My initial idea and inspiration to make this came from my liking of the Stranger Things series. I wanted to create something on a canvas and I incorporated paper mache to make it 3D. At first, I wanted to make the Clicker from The Last of Us, but I realized it would be too challenges because of all the minor details in the head. At the end, I added acrylic gloss to make it appear slimey and saliva-ey. I learned most about mixing colors all through the color wheel to achieve the color I wanted. Also, I gained more experience using and making paper maché.
