The article I chose was: https://vancouversun.com/special-sections/international-womens-day/international-womens-day-2022/how-close-are-the-canadian-provinces-to-closing-the-gender-pay-gap based on the pay-gap between the 2 genders.
1. What is this article about?
The article written by the Vancouver Sun shares information about the gender pay-gap in the work industry. Both Alberta and British Columbia have a gender wage gap of approximately 14 cents. Although it is said that the pay gap has been shrunk in the past 2 decades, women are still facing unwanted discrimination. Ann Decter, the senior director of community initiatives for the Women’s Canadian Foundation, states that the gap exists in every income level in the economy, at every level of education and at every age group. To prevent this, a few ways include making workplace flexibility a priority, continue advancing pay transparency, and to law pertaining to equity.
2. Who does it involve?
This involves men and women working as the same position in the same workplace, but women earning 84 cents for every $1 men are earning. Ann Decter believes that “communities thrive when everything is equal.” This pay-gap follows women all the way to retirement and has a negative effect on their lives, whether they realize it or not.
3. Why did you chose this article?
I chose this article because a few months ago, I’ve heard about the pay difference between men and women in the past before. I truly think that it is unfair how men and women are working the same, yet women are earning less money. I hope that thinks will become much more fair in every place in the future.
4. How does this news article relate to the story we are reading- The Friday Everything Changed.
This relates to the story, The Friday Everything Changed because both are describing the difference society created for men and women. At the beginning, the males are favorited for both instances. In the short story, The Friday Everything Changed, the teacher eventually allowed the girls to carry the water bucket and be able to do the same tasks the boys do. Hopefully in the work industry, significant change will happen, including equality and fairness.
