Chili Cook off Reflection – Foods 10

For the chili cook off, our group chose to make a pepperoni pizza chili and it turned out how we imagined it too. Our group didn’t win, but we think that we did a good job. On the first day we had to try and come up with an idea about what type of chili we were going to make. We each found one recipe and decided form that. We chose the pepperoni pizza one because we wanted to try something different than everyone else and we wanted to take a risk with trying something new. The next day we had to prepare all of out ingredients to get ready for making the chili. We didn’t need to prepare much because we were using a lot of canned items, which we don’t need to prepare, but we did have to cut some of the vegetables and measure out all the spices. The next day was when we had to make the chili and mix all the ingredients together. We started off by cooking the beef and sausages together and once they were finished cooking we drained the fat and cooked then we cooked the vegetables. Then we added the meat back in with all of the beans, spices and sauces. After we did that we couldn’t really do a lot because we had to wait for the chili to cook so we took turns watching it and we were also just talking with each other. A little bit after we let it cook we tried a little bit of it to make sure that it had all the flavours that we were hoping for and then we continued to let it cook. When it was close to the end of the block we had to transfer out chili into a container and store it in the fridge so we could cook it the next day. On the last day of the cook off, it was definitely the busiest day. We took the chili out of the fridge and immediately placed it on the stove so it could heat up and when it heated up we just kept it at a simmer. One person in our group was watching the chili, while the other two of us made a cheese braid bread. We gathered all the ingredients together and mixed them as instructed. Once we were able to get a dough consistency I rolled it out and cut it into three pieces. Each piece was then individually rolled into a long strip that was then combined with the others to make a braid. The bread didn’t take very long to cook so we made sure to watch it. Since it was almost time to present our chili to the judges we had to start plating everything and coming up what with what we were going to talk about. I did most of the presentation for the plate and the bowl, also the topping of the chili which was cheese and pepperoni. We went up with our dishes we talked about the main ingredients that gave it flavour and what they were used for. After that, that was the end of the cook off. Even though we didn’t win we had a lot of fun making the chili and working together with each other.
