Foods Journal – Consumable Waste

There is so much food that is consumed every day and people don’t realize how much waste is being produced from it. Say you are in a rush and you grab a granola bar before you go somewhere. There is usually a wrapper around it, and there is not always a garbage can around to throw it away in, so some people just throw in on the ground. If one person didn’t properly throw it away in wouldn’t be a big deal but imagine if everyone threw the wrapper on the ground, and how much waste would be everywhere.  Plastic, cardboard, paper, tinfoil and Styrofoam are just a few of the packaging on the outsides of the food I eat daily. Every food comes in a different packaging for different reasons. Some foods are non-perishable so the type of container that they go in have to be sealed well to make sure no air can get inside that would make the food go bad because in theory they can last forever. The first line of defence for food is the packaging, keeping out all the bacteria so it is important that every food item is properly sealed and so no bacteria can get inside. Once we have eaten the food from the packaging it should go to the proper place, whether it is recycling or garbage. About 4.6 pounds of trash per person per day is thrown away and less than one quarter of it is recycled. People should be more aware of what they are doing with their waste because it doesn’t take much time to throw it away. If you are throwing it away make sure you know which bin it should properly go into, so the garbage can be properly decomposed or recycled. After one day the food waste goes in the trash and is taken to the landfill of the garbage dump where it is left to disintegrate or be remade into something else. Over the time of one year the garbage would most likely be decomposed by now or if it wasn’t properly thrown away it could have been ingested by an animal that could have possibly killed them.  Over the time of one hundred years the garbage would end up in the Pacific garbage circle with all the other plastics and garbage that everyone just threw away not caring that is also still continuing to grow. Some things that we can do to reduce the amount of waste we create is not using lots of single use plastics. Single use plastics are plastics that you only use once before being thrown away or recycled. As an alternative to single use plastics you can use reusable bags when you go to the store, bring your own cups to use instead of using one of theirs, don’t use plastic bags as much and try to use containers. Another thing is to make sure you recycle properly instead of being careless, maybe try to set a reminder or start a habit. One more thing you could do is just be aware of how much plastic you are using daily and try to find ways that you can replace or substitute the plastic.
