Week 3 – Precalc 11

In Week 3 of Precalc 11 we had our first unit test and then we switched to unit 2, roots and radicals. We just started this unit and and I have already learned a few different concepts, one of them being adding and subtraction roots. The first thing to know when you are looking to add or subtract roots is the idea of combining coefficients. It is very similar to what we learned in grade 10 math with polynomials. You always combine like terms if they have the same base so when you are combining roots you have to make sure that they are the same. It is easiest to convert all of the radicals into the same form, normally a mixed radical, and simplify it and get the radical to its smallest form. There may be cases where none of the root are the same and in that case you would just leave in in the simplest form. Below is a photo and there are some examples of how to solve these type of equations.
