How to solve a system of equations with a graph

A system of equation is an ensemble of at least two equations that can be solve while using different strategies.

There are different systems of equations:

  • the linear system with two linear equations
  • the linear-quadratic system that has a linear and a quadratic equation.
  • the quadratic-quadratic system that has two quadratic equations.

To find the solution(s) graphically we just have to write the equations and to graph them. The answer(s) is where the two lines meet each other. It is the(ir) common point(s).

Example:

  1. y= 2x+6

We know that our slope is 2/1 which means we are going to graph a positive function which goes right 1 and up two. The y-intercept is 6.

  1. y= x(x) -2

We know our parabola will opens up, there is no stretch and the y-intercept is -2.

The solution is (-2,2).
