The Dark Side of Technology

The “Dark side” of Technology

In a world that is always evolving, we humans have created a source of survival and are becoming dependent on that source which is called technology. We revolve our everyday needs around technology, be it getting medical help, education, cooking our food, transportation etc. and even if technology has it perks (how it changed the way we live in a better contrast), if we take a look into how technology is changing society and the environment in another direction, steering it away from positivity, we can see the damage that it is doing to us and the world. Technology can lead to various health problems, either it’s an emotional or physical problem. We can sit and stare at the screen for hours on end and this can cause some physical problems like obesity since a person won’t necessarily get the exercise they need by sitting in one spot all day. Technology can also cause neck, head, and back pain due to being in one position for too long, it also affects the eyes since they are trained on the screen and technology also causes lack of sleep since about 95% of people go to bed with a phone or some sort of form of technology which would make it harder to fall asleep. For the emotional aspect, technology increases anxiety, depression, and stress because we’re becoming more dependant on our technology which can cause an addiction for our phones/computers etc. studies show that an average person between the age of 18-54 checks their phone about 34 times a day, and it is most likely that they are checking either their social media or some form of entertainment instead of going outside or hanging out with friends which can lead to lack of social skill which THEN can lead to depression, stress, and anxiety. Some social media platforms also induce challenging body/living standards which can decrease our self-confidence and increase more insecurities either about how we look or how successful we become. Even if being separated from your phone can seem desperately boring, the outcome is highly beneficial. There are some problems that could be fixed if you decrease your time spent on a phone and instead of spending it with your friends or family, this could help people socialize and heal any soreness. It’s important to take some time to yourself and away from technology to get a sense of some self-esteem and start depending on the people around you and most importantly yourself.
