Surface Area of a Sphere

Today in Math 10 Honours we did a class activity to find out the formula for the surface area of a sphere.

To find out the formula we were given an orange, a knife, paper towels and a piece of paper. We were told to cut the orange in half, trace the circumference of those halves on a piece of paper multiple times and then peel the orange carefully and put those peels inside of the circles we have traced (No overlapping or white spots)

Here are some pictures of the process:

After we were done with putting the peels carefully into the circles we had these results:

The peels covered 4 of the circles we drew therefore we came up with the conclusion that the surface area of the sphere was 4 times (Area of a circle).

Therefore the formula of the surface area of a sphere is : 4\pir^2
