How do stereotypes affect people?

The book Oliver Button is a Sissy, written by Tomie Depaola, shows how boys are stereotyped through the character Oliver Button. He likes girly things and he is bullied and called names just because when you think of boys, one thinks of manly games and sports, not dancing or playing with dolls. So, the stereotype that boys need to do certain things, made kids and even his own father think of him as different and weird. That resulted in him being constantly teased and made him very sad just for doing what he likes. Also, Oliver had no friends until he performed well at a talent show in which he danced at. The next day everybody at his school liked him. Humans can judge too quickly and don’t like things out of the norm, we need to prove ourselves to other to gain respect and acceptance. This book shows that to gain respect from others, one can pursue their dreams while ignoring teasing and judgement.
