I interviewed Sydney Turner. She is an olympic gymnast that competes for the national team of Canada and she gets to travel around the world for competitions and represents her home country; Canada. Sydney Turner is an artistic gymnast, which means she does the four events during competitions (Vault, Bars, Beam, Floor). She is 18 years old and she helped win Canada’s first ever team medal at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in 2022.

I chose to interview Sydney because she is a very good gymnast and gymnastics is one of my many passions. I have been doing gymnastics since I was about 3 years old and I have never stopped. I chose her because she was a former student at Riverside Secondary School and I like how she is a local athlete. She inspires me to become a better gymnast and I always watch her routines on youtube.

From this interview, I learned a lot. To say a few, I learned that to accomplish your goals and to succeed, you have to go through the ups and downs before you get there. I learned that even though hard things in life can stop you, you have to overcome it and keep pushing through like how Sydney had a bad injury and she was out of gymnastics for 6 months. Yet, she came back strong. I also learned that good skills take a lot of patience and time. She has given me encourgement to keep going even if I’m having a bad day.

The questions and her answers:

  • Can you explain your roles and responsibilities with your current position?

  • What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?

  • What advice would you pass onto someone interested in what you are doing?

  • Why are you passionate about your job or role?

  • What are some ways that you encourage yourself after a hard time?

  • What is your favorite part about your role?
