Indigenous Exploration – Media Representation

Indigenous Exploration Podcast

This Indigenous Exploration Podcast is an exploration of how indigenous people were/are represented in the media. My partner and I chose this topic to expand our knowledge on the discrimination they faced and to be more aware of the stereotypes they are currently facing.

Indigenous Exploration Reflection

During this project I developed my learning by new experiences. The first thing I learned was how to use databases to find the exact information I am looking for. I found these databases extremely useful because not only did it help me find one article for my research but so many that I actually had choices. Another new thing I learned was how to find royalty free music and sound effects for our podcast. I found Bendound.com to be especially helpful in finding what I want completely for free. Before this project I had done a bit of Audacity in grade six however during the development of this podcast I learned more about how to use Audacity to my benefit. The first thing my partner and I did in our researching journey was look up article relating to our topic on Google. We could find some stuff for our podcast, but it took awhile with a lot of different searches to find something even similar to our topic. Then we got introduced to databases and our researching game evolved. We got a lot of information from the databases and suddenly, we had full fledged ideas for our topic. An obstacle my partner and I faced during the creation of our podcast was picking the correct noise levels for all the different parts. I had the idea that we should have indigenous music playing in the background of us talking however it was hard to find harmony between the music and our talking. We changed the how loud our talking is and how quiet the music is multiple times in Audacity.

Core Competency Reflection

Positive and Personal Cultural Identity: What are some aspects you value about this culture, as well as your own?

One of the things I value the most about indigenous culture is their connection to nature. I believe it is really important to have a strong connection to nature for the benefit of our planet. Their idea of using something completely and having no waste is really admirable. When I was younger and the teachers told me about that in school I was so amazed. I have looked up to it since. Another thing I admire a lot about first nations culture is how beautiful everything is. I can tell they put dedication into every single piece they make because it is always so intricate and it tells a story. One thing I value about my culture is that I am actually Algonquin First Nations of Ontario. I do not look like and I am non status but I have learn to accept that even though no one would believe me I am first nations. I enjoy it every time we do an indigenous activity at school because it makes me feel more connected to my culture.

  1. Thank you for posting your “Indigenous Exploration” audio project (podcast). As the assignment was completed for both English 9 and COL, I have the following feedback for you on the post:

    – All elements of the assignment’s post were exceptional and properly uploaded
    – Reflection on blog explains process taken to complete the assignment, this was very well done and detailed
    – Music could be turned down a bit, distracting over the voices of you both although a fine song
    – Audio quality is clear and delivery is well executed, overshadowed by music at points
    – Well researched
    – Professional sounding podcast, well spoken, both of you!

Overall, this assignment was extremely well done. If you have any questions, please let me know.

    Thank you!

    Mr. Barazzuol
