1. Who I interviewed including their roles and responsibilities:
I interviewed Lisa Carlsen who is a show jumper and has been to the Olympics many times. In addition, she also owns a stable called Trademark Stables in Calgary, Alberta which is a co-operation with her husband. Her profession allows her to teach, train, and sell horses. She won a gold medal at the 1986 Pan American Games with her horse called Kahula, which she got when she was just 15 years old. To this day she still does Grand Prixes and is on the road to the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. So, she is a successful showjumper that has seen and been through all of the struggles and accomplishments of a female equestrian.

2. Why you chose to interview that individual?
I chose this individual because at a young age, I’ve been always interested in horseback riding or just horses in general. So, I started doing horseback riding camps on and off when I was about 4-5 years old, and took it a step further and got enrolled in lessons at age 6. I have ridden all kinds of horses in my 8 years of experience and I have tried at least 2 disciplines, showjumping and dressage. And horseback riding is something that I can go to and take a deep breath and relax, as my thoughts can disappear and I can just be in the moment. So, I decided to interview someone that has the same passion as me and see if any of my experiences can relate to theirs as well. I’ve never really been interested in going to the Olympics because I don’t actually own my own horse, so it would most likely won’t happen but it’s interesting to get a perspective from any kind of Olympian. Initially, I was going to interview someone who is a psychologist but there was nobody that was available to be interviewed, plus psychologists on Instagram were difficult to contact.
3. What you learned from the interview and how that connects to your passions/interests?
From this interview, I have learnt that it takes a lot of dedication and perseverance to be able to go to the Olympics and or just to do local horse shows. I have done one horse show in the past and it didn’t go so well, but she did many and didn’t give up when she didn’t win all the time. To be honest, I thought that was pretty amazing because from her dedicated mindset she was able to go to the Olympics. Also, I learnt that if you’re really passionate about something it doesn’t matter what age you start it or if you’re not good at it, you will get better and strive. I really can’t believe that she’s still show jumping even though she’s around 50 years old, as most athletes retire when they’re around their late 20’s or early 30’s. I feel like this sport can be pursued for a very long time because you change horses and all of them have different problems and styles, so you will never be “perfect” but you will always be learning something new, which makes it interesting.
4. Share what opportunities this interview has opened up for you:
I thought I made a big connection/opportunity with this individual because many big jumping shows that you can win hundreds of thousands of dollars are in Thunderbird, which is in Langley and I could have the opportunity to see her ride in some of the shows and could even get to see her horse. She has also shown me that even though I don’t want to go to the Olympics now, I could go at any age because there is no age restriction for this sport. Even though she doesn’t live in British Columbia, hopefully I can still see her and maybe in the future I can have a conversation with her face to face. Furthermore, she did follow me on Instagram and gave me her daughter’s email if I wanted to ask her further questions about herself or even where she is competing next.
