Core Competency Math 9 Aidan Starr

I have demonstrated critical thinking by thinking of ways that better performance in math and improve my grades like making my self a study routine that I have found useful to me and that has improved my grades. My first math test I scored a C+, and my most recent math test I have improved to an A. I have done this by asking questions, studying with friends and thinking of ways that can calm test anxiety which have all lead to improved performance. I can look over my errors and reflect on them, ask for help and learn where I went wrong to improve for next time.

Unit 3/4 Summary Assignment

This unit in math we covered linear equations, we learned how to solve inequalities, and learned how to solve for x in equations with an equal sign or with a greater than or less sign. For my project I will be solving two different kinds of linear equations with different signs. For my first example I will be solving a number line equation. For my second example I will be determining the value of x.

For my number line equation the first step is to write the worded question as a linear equation.

“The temperature is at most-4 degrees Celsius.

we can determine that the equation includes-4, making the equation anything less than or equal to -4

To write that as a linear equation it would look like x≤-4

To place this on a number line determine your boundary point of -4, and draw your arrow facing the left towards any number less than or equal to -4, make sure you shade your dot to determine that it is also equal to.

For my second example I will be solving a linear equation to solve the variable.

3x+2=8

To isolate x we move the constant to the right side of the variable changing our equation to 3x=8 -2 which turns in to 3x=6

the next step is to divide the the coefficient by its self (divide by 3x) and we also divide 6 by 3x which isolates x making our answer x=2

For my next example I will be doing the equation 6x-5= 4x -17

like our example we want to isolate x to do so, we can swap the -5 and 4x

it is important to remember whenever a number goes over the equal sign it changes values.

Our new equation is 2x=-12

To isolate x we need to divide 2x by it’s self and divide -12 by 2x as well

After we have divided x has been isolated making our answer x=-6

Unit 2 math assignment Aidan Starr

This unit we covered powers and square roots, Pythagorean theorem, and covered exponent laws such as the Product rule, Quotient rule, Zero power rule, Combined Operations, Combining powers, Power to Power rule, raising a product to a power, raising a sum to a power and raising a quotient to a power, and estimating the square roots of irrational numbers. For my assaigment I will be doing just that and demonstrating how I can use multiplication to find the closest square root to an irrational number.

Step 1.

Find out If your number is an irrational number meaning it is a repeating decimal without a pattern or if it is a rational number.

Step 2.

Find two multiples that your number falls between.

Step 3 find which multiples your number is closest two.

Step 4 choose the appropriate decimal to estimate the square root of your irrational number.

For my examples I will estimate the square roots of the numbers 24 and 430.

Math Unit 1 Aidan Starr

This past week of math we covered integers and learned about adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying rational numbers such as fractions. We learned how to convert improper fractions into mixed and vice versa and how to turn decimals into fractions. There are certain rules we learned with adding and subtracting integers, a formula with 2 negative numbers will turn into a positive, adding two positives will have a positive outcome and adding and negative and positive will make a negative. When we divide fractions we learned that we convert mixed fractions into improper fractions and that we flip the reciprocal, multiply the two fractions and reduce to the lowest common denominator. When we add fractions we learnt that if they do not share a common denominator we have to fined their common denominator to properly add or subtract the fractions. Other topics we have learnt are placing decimals and fractions on number lines, we have learned about real numbers, rational numbers, whole numbers, integers, and natural numbers. For my example I will demonstrate how to divide two fractions and the steps that it took me to get my answer. I will also be demonstrating how to convert a mixed fraction into an improper fraction and an improper fraction into a mixed fraction.

Step 1.

flip the reciprocal number

Step 2.

cross reduce your fractions to their lowest form.

Step 3.

multiply your reduced fractions.

Step 4 reduce the new fraction to get your answer.

Step 1

Multiply the the whole number and the denominator.

Step 2

Add the numerator

Step 3

add your mutilped number to the numerator

Step 4

Write the totalled number on top of the same denominator you started with for your answer. (denominator stays the same)

Step 1

figure out how many times the denominator goes into the numerator.

Step 2.

write the the remainder beside the whole number on top of the denominator.

Step 3

Place the whole number on the left hand side of the fraction and keep the denominator the same.

Step 4 to see if you did it write times the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator and see if it is equal to your improper fraction.

What questions Did I need to Research in order to create my Sway?

To start off with I asked questions like where can it be found? What are it’s uses, who discovered it. Once I got some simple questions I started to ask more in depth questions like it’s information when it is at it’s boiling point, how many electrons, protons, neutrons and it’s molecular properties and what aspects of the element it has. I asked questions like can it be toxic to humans, it’s impact on humanity could we live without it? I asked what are it’s impacts of mining it to the environment because I am passionate about the environment. Once I asked questions like that I found the information that I needed.

What new or familiar tools did I need to research for my project?

I primarily used websites like Britannica.com or science focused websites such as livescience.com.  I also used Youtube to help me research for my project by watching different creators videos on my element explaining it in an easy to understand way. A new tool I used was the periodic table which helped me collect information on it’s molecular properties. I used citation machine to help cite my sources and pexels which gave me some great photos.

What was the process I used to create my project?

I first chose my element and started to do background research on it and writing notes. Then I started to write my responses based off the information I found and put it into my sway, added my citations and photos, where I then assembled everything and put together the final copy of my project.

How did I verify and cite the information I found?

I chose reliable websites that we’re secure and crossed referenced and checked multiple sources to make sure that each cite I used had correct information.  I compared what I found online to my periodic table and the information that I previously studied in class.

How did the process of completing this project go?

I think it went well, I used my time wisely and put effort into the work I was doing. I found reliable sources and kept track of them in a document, wrote my own notes and verified what I was researching. I faced a few challenges like finding more detailed information on different websites to elaborate on my project. I studied the history of my element and how it came to be. I created my Sway added in reliable pictures and a video that I found to be helpful. I think the process of creating my project went well.

What would I do differently?

I think I would create more unique questions to research and spread out my work in a way where I add new things to my project day by day instead of all at once. I started off strong did my research and took my notes but near the end of my time I started to slow down my work and had to add on new details to my project last minute. I would of liked to add more details into my sway but for the most part I am very proud of my project.

Unit 1 Lesson #1 – How Can I Manage My Stress in a Way That Would Benefit My Daily Health?

YOUR PARAGRAPH HERE

Unit 1 lesson one

how can you manage stress in multiple ways that benefit your mental health and physical health? You can find a physical activity that you enjoy and look forward to, this also improves your physical health. This is something that benefited my health over quarantine, I started hiking, going on walks, and doing different body weight and weight training exercises. The sunny weather kept me outside and I found being outside made me calmer, happier and I slept better.  I grew as a person and worked on my health over Quarantine, and it helped me cope with all the new changes to our world with the pandemic. Other ways that I found benefit my mental health is disconnecting from technology more, I consciously made the choice to try and limit my screen time like while I was on walks, I would keep my phone in the pocket and enjoy nature around me. Doing anything you like will improve your mental health if it is healthy, like cooking, playing board games, doing art, exercising, and these are all things that I have started incorporating into my life. more connected. Listening to music is another way that you can improve your mental health, listening to songs that you relate to can be very beneficial. Spending time with my dog is another way of improving my mental health, alone time with my pet gives me time to relax and spend time with him and just pet him. If none of that works for you the biggest thing that can help you deal with stress is having a longer sleep each night.

Unit 1 Lesson #2 – How does technology influence my social, physical, and emotional health?

Technology impacts my health in multiple ways, there are some positives and some negatives. One negative is that technology can be time consuming and lead to procrastination when it comes to doing certain things such as cooking or exorcizing. Technology can also be addicting as I and most teenagers and even adults get into the habit of constantly checking their phones. Most days my phone is the first and the last thing I see each day which can affect my happiness and emotional health. On the other hand, I have also learned to control how often I use my phone and know my limits. Before I check my phone in the morning, I make sure first to make my bed, and wash my face and brush my teeth before even touching my phone. Social media also has a strong influence on my life, but I have gotten to the point where I am in control of my social medias and they have no control over me. I use them to share pieces of my life, connect with friends and family, and see what others are doing. Thankfully I haven’t dealt with self esteem issues due to social media because I know that the glamour of everyone’s life that they portray on social media, they also live an average life and its not always glamours and perfect. I am still working on my relationship with technology and social media but I am being smart and positive through out it all.

Unit 1 Lesson #3 – How Can I Support the Mental Health and Well-Being of Myself and Others Now and in the Future?

Unit 1 Lesson #3 – How Can I Support the Mental Health and Well-Being of Myself and Others Now and in the Future?

Mental health is an important part of everyone’s life including my own. Different ways I can support my mental health as well as others is checking in on myself and those around me. Asking people how they are doing and being aware of what behaviour can be concerning for their mental health as well of my own. Identifying concerning behaviours is something that I can do to help prevent bad situations. I can identify what is a mental health concern and if it is overly concerning, I can seek the help of a trusted adult. I can build trust with others and be a good listener. If I know that someone is posting or saying something concerning, I can talk with them but contact an adult if they are still showing concerning behaviours. The best thing I can do in any situation that I feel is concerning regarding my mental health or the mental health of someone around me is to talk with the person or talk to someone I trust, if talking to someone doesn’t help with what I/they are feeling than it Is never a bad idea to talk to a counsellor, teacher, parent, someone that you can trust.

Unit 1 Lesson #4 – What Does it Mean to You to be in an Unhealthy Relationship?

YOUR PARAGRAPH HERE

I would identify a toxic relationship that I am in if I feel like I am being gas lighted (not listened to, belittled etc.) If I feel pressured in any way by a partner, parent, friend, adult that I have a personal relationship with, to do something I know I am not comfortable with. If I am being taken advantage of, that means whoever is taking advantage of me, has an unhealthy relationship with me. Obviously, if there are any circumstances of abuse or harassment whether it be verbal, sexual, physical, those are all situations that would be an unhealthy relationship. If I feel a lack of control over my life due to someone else, I can identify that as an unhealthy relationship. For example, being told where and where not to go, talk to, wear, say etc. If I have trust issues with someone that always means something and is to be taken seriously. Trust issues are due to past behaviors’ or actions that have strained your trust, and relationship. These are only a few examples but, in any relationship, you feel uncomfortable, unsafe, and not cared for it is usually a sign of an unhealthy relationship.

Unit 2 Lesson #1 – What Can I Do to Help Myself or Someone Else (now or in the future) Who May Be Showing Signs of Addictive Behaviours?

YOUR PARAGRAPH HERE

Making sure that I can properly identify harmful or concerning behaviors is one of the most important factors of being able to help someone with addiction or signs of addiction. I can talk with them and help them find resources that will help them with their symptoms or addiction. I can support and encourage them to find help from a trusted adult they feel comfortable around. Some recourses that I can provide them with are counselors, youth workers, and certain websites. Personally, I do not want to be the one to fix their problems, because there is so much that only I can do. I can talk with them about their home life/situation, and make sure they are in a safe environment before taking major measures. For myself, I can find someone and educate myself on people who will be able to help me. I can talk to a counselor or a youth worker about my addictive behaviors. I would make sure that I am open to certain individuals about my addiction if I had one so that I can be treated properly for my addiction. It may be difficult to be open with others but having resilience is a major factor in getting better and sober.

Unit 2 Lesson #2 – How Can You See Yourself Using the Skills of Delay, Refusal, and Negotiation in Your Daily Life?

YOUR PARAGRAPH HERE

I can see myself getting out of uncomfortable situations or even dangerous situations. I am not the person to go out a lot but at one point throughout my life I am sure I will have to use delay refusal or negotiation. If it means someone has offered me a substance but I do not want to upset them about saying no I can delay the situation by saying “let’s try this another time.” If it is something a lot smaller like being offered a drink at a friend, I am comfortable withs house, I can just use refusal skills like “No thank you, I’m fine.” If I am in a situation where I have used refusal skills, but it did not go well and the other person got irritated, and I do not feel safe I can use negotiation skills like offering them something else to do that they enjoy. It is important to have delay refusal and negotiation skills so that I can come off as polite and prevent situations from turning bad. If I end up in a situation where I feel like panicking, I can use my skills to prevent things from escalating and keeping my self-safe. Being able to have the skills of saying no to something can prevent addictions or unhealthy habits that were developed because of peer pressure. Negotiation, delay, and refusal skills will keep me safe when I must handle a situation of peer pressure. I can use these skills to safely party, interact with new people, keep myself safe, or even in a much worse situation.

How does the artifact you selected demonstrate strengths & growth in the communication competency?

In what ways might you further develop your communication competency?

Self-Reflection

Describe how the artifact you selected shows your strengths & growth in specific core competencies. The prompt questions on the left – or other self-assessment activities you may have done – may guide your reflection process.

Social Responsibility

How did I build new relationships in PE?

I built relationships by listening thoughtfully to the people around me and using kind words with others in an unfamiliar environment so that I could develop new friendships. When my peers were talking, I used body language to show I was listening to what they were saying and had an open mind to things they would say or ideas they had. If I disagreed with something one of my friends said, I would listen to what they said, give positive feedback and share my idea and letting them know I feel, in a respectful way. I contributed to my community and cared for the environment by respecting COVID-19 19 guidelines to keep others safe. I missed my friends and have not seen them after school hours for a long time, but I respect my community’s safety, so I keep my social interactions to at school only and always wear a mask and practice social isolation. Another way I contribute to my community is having a positive and kind attitude especially with people in my community it might be small, but it has a positive impact on others around me. I value diversity by advocating for minorities and spreading valuable information to bring awareness to certain situations like Black Lives Matter. My friendships are not based off race, religion, sexuality, or gender, they are based off the individual’s characters and personal morals.

Lit Circle project-Newspaper and script

Lit Circle Final Project (Breakdown and Script):

By Maggie, Aidan and Rheann

For our project, we decided to collaborate together and write a script for an imaginary interview between two reporters and Arnold Spirit. We as well decided to present it through a newspaper called The Spokane Post where it talks about the interview itself and includes the contents.

Themes that tie into the interview:

(“-“ = examples on how we included the themes in our interview questions and responses)

  • Expectations (of self or others)- How Junior has always had low self-expectations and others have too for him. We cover how he is proving himself and others wrong and finding out how much he is capable of.
  • Self-esteem – How Junior has improved with how he sees himself and how this game could have affected it as well.
  • Inner conflict- Fighting himself about whether he should try out for the basketball and possibly him going to Reardan with knowing his tribe could turn on him.
  • Harassment – Junior talks about the racism he faced and the treatment he got at Reardan and briefly touches on how he was always looked down upon at the reserve.
  • Commitment -The reporter asks how he persevered through the pain and stiches. Junior talks about why he did and how he was committed to the game and showing what he could do.
  • Racism- Briefly, Junior explains how he was separated from the rest at Reardan because of his skin and background and about some of the racism at Reardan.
  • Privilege -While talking about what sets Junior apart from the rest at Reardan, he mentions how those at Reardan were handed more opportunities and how lives are very different.

Project Summary and Explanation:

The plot of our story is a spin-off of a basketball game that Rearden played against the Wellpinit Redskins. Jr faces injuries during the game which leads Reardan’s team to lose. Rearden was on a winning streak before having to vs the Redskins for the first time this season. Jr winds up in the hospital and sparks a lot of attention and the local newspaper interviews Jr from his hospital room while he in recovery. The interviewers ask Jr questions about the game, and his life outside of basketball on the reserve and many more interesting topics the press wants to know. The interview covers multiple themes from the book such as self-esteem, racism, harassment, expectations he has of himself and others, privilege and other smaller themes that fall under those umbrellas.

The interview Script:

R1: Hello, and Welcome back to Spokane’s Sports News Center and today with us we have Arnold Spirit, a freshman on Reardan’s boys’ basketball team and one their star players. We are currently in the hospital with him now after he faced injuries while playing against the Redskins. His team lost against the Redskins after having a very successful game before. We are talking about the game as well as his life outside of basketball.

R1: Hello Arnold, it’s great to have you with us especially under these circumstances. We hope you are feeling better than you were after you just faced these injuries and not in too much pain. Tell us, what was different about this game from all the previous games you won, what went wrong?

A:  Thanks, man. I am feeling a bit better than before and the pain killers are helping too. In this game, I was faced up against my old team and that already made me anxious and nervous which affected the way I played. They are not happy with me at the moment, for transferring to Reardan and are definitely holding a grudge against me. This is most likely why I got a quarter thrown at my head from their audience, why I got defended more aggressively against and how I am here now.

R2: Are you angry with how the Redskins and their audience treated you? If you could tell them one thing what would it be?

A: I guess in some ways I am angry with what they did as it wound me up in the hospital. Although, I do understand why they are upset with me as I have left my home for a ‘white school’. I have never been treated well on the reserve and have often been harassed but, this was for a whole new reason. One thing I would say is I might play for Reardan but, the reserve is still my home. I don’t regret transferring to Reardan but, that doesn’t mean I think I am better than everyone else.

R1: What made you persevere through the pain from a quarter being thrown at your head and why did you want to receive the stitches right away?

A: I put high expectations on myself and I choose to not be a quitter. I wanted to show what I am made of and I didn’t want to coward out, even if that meant I would have a scar from stiches. Possibly the chance of my team losing without me or not wanting Wellpinit to see me face a loss was what kept me going. I was in the heat of the moment with the only thing on my mind was getting back in the game.

R2: Do you think this game could affect how you play in the future, physically and Mentally?

A: Ever since I was a baby, I have been a fighter as I was born with a brain condition and survived the surgery. Mentally, I hope this doesn’t throw me off and I think I just need to get back into my game-mindset. This was a bit of a setback from the reserve but, now that my mindset has changed and I know what I can accomplish, I should be able to continue to play my best in the future.

R1: Moving on, what made you decide to transfer to Reardan even though you knew you would face a backlash?

A: Without getting too personal, I felt like I have more of a future at Reardan than I do at the reserve. This got most of my tribe upset at me, and I guess you could say I had it coming. I am trying to reach for success and transferring schools was one of the steps that I needed to take to achieve my goals.

R2: Was there someone who helped you or inspired you to take that step?

A: As a matter of fact, there was, my previous teacher from Wellpinit, showed up at my house after I threw a textbook at him. I was expecting to get scolded, but he greatly influenced me to go for it. It was unexpected, to hear something especially coming from my teacher on the reserve but, hearing him want me to succeed affected where I am today, and I am super grateful for that.

R1: Did you feel welcomed coming to Reardan, and are there any significant differences you noticed between Wellpinit and Reardan?

A: To be honest, at first, I felt like an outcast who didn’t belong. Many didn’t help that feeling either with racial jokes or comments too. There are plenty of differences and misconceptions between Wellpinit and Reardan, mainly the etiquette, ways of being and of course who attend the schools. Though, there were more similarities than I thought. One of the things I realized was that everyone faces tough issues in their life, no matter who you are or where you come from.

R2: Who made you feel the most welcomed at Reardan?

A: I would say one of my friends, Penelope, who I met on the very first day. After getting to know each other a bit more, we formed a close bond. Once I started sparking my own conversations it got easier to connect with others and then, I felt like I belonged. That is a lesson that I learned, how most people aren’t out to get you and are not as bad as they seem. You just need to be able to have enough courage to talk to others more and that can spark so many new friendships.

R1: Do you ever think about going back to Wellpinit? If you wanted, you could simply move back to your old school and not have to travel such a distance or put yourself in such a different environment.

A: As much as I miss going to Wellpinit, the thought hasn’t even come across my mind once. I know it was a good decision and I don’t like to quit. I have already started now so what’s the point in stopping? The travel to and from school can be long and tiring some days but, I have a feeling it will be worth it in the end. That is why I haven’t given up yet.

R2: What do you think sets you apart the most from the rest of the students at Reardan?

A: My physical appearance and heritage separate me the most. Because of it, I am less privileged than the others at Reardan. They have been handed more opportunities and our lives are very different. I live in a poor reserve while some don’t have to worry if they will eat dinner. Most do not need to worry about the way they will get treated for their appearance while I have to. So, there are many things that set us apart but, I am proving that I am no lesser than the rest and what I am capable of.

R1: How did you adjust to these changes at Reardan? Are you still trying to adjust?

A: Well, I think the thing that is helping me adjust is basketball. I played on Wellpinit and now Reardan and basketball is something that can stay the same for me. The gameplay, the court, my skill and more. Another thing is I have to put myself out there and step out of my comfort zone to make new connections.

R2:  Did anyone at your new school give you a hard time in the beginning? Did you encounter any rude or hateful comments that upset you and affected your experience here?

A: Yeah, I did encounter some but, I tried to not let it get to me, I am better than that. I didn’t know how to react at first and threw a punch but, I think what I did was pretty cool even though I regret it. Standing up for myself was nice and I felt empowered a bit too. I have always been looked down on but, at my new school, I was getting judged for a whole new reason which is my background and culture.

R1: Moving on to basketball, did you put pressure on yourself? Do you think if you weren’t as courageous, it would affect you trying out for basketball or even coming to Reardan?

A: Yeah, I put a lot of pressure on myself because I wanted to prove that I wasn’t just some kid from the reserve who only wanted to cause trouble and act out. I am a pretty decent dude who likes ball and has a bit of hope for once.  If I hadn’t, then there is a chance I wouldn’t have tried out for basketball, but I am glad I did.

R2: How did you feel about trying out for Reardan’s basketball team, especially in a brand-new school and environment? What were your expectations, and did you think you would make it?

A: I was pretty hesitant at first because I didn’t know if I would even make any of the levels. I was also nervous since I did not know how well the other people trying out would play but, I decided to give it a shot as you can see. I don’t really expect a lot from myself because it’s hard for me to believe in myself but once I did, I realized I was capable of so much more.

R1: Moving on to your injuries, do you think you will recover well enough for the next game?

A: I think I will be fine although, there was worry the hit would affect my brain because of a condition I was born with. So far, it is a bit early to tell but, I am feeling better and excited to play more games.

R2: Thank you so much for your time tonight and for your responses. We will let you rest for now and good luck for the future! We look forward to seeing you recover quickly and more of your playing. This is Spokane’s Sports News Center reporting live and we will catch you next time!

HCE 9- English write

  Assimilation Vs. Inclusivity

This powerful image makes the viewer feel confused at first. You break down the image and see a ratio of grey and gloomy children who appear to be of indigenous heritage and on the right side of the image a smaller number of indigenous people that are in colour. Seeing the grey children made me feel sad they do not appear to be sad; they appear to be emotionless. they are not smiling, and they are not crying they look like dolls with drawn on features. I see when I look at this image, children of residential schools. I am not sure if the people in colour are survivors, what their future could have looked like before residential schools, or if it is a small portion of indigenous people that were not affected directly by the schools. They appear to be happy when they are in colour and some wearing traditional cultural clothing. I think the colours play a major role, the people in colour to me represent happiness, culture, peace, and individuality. They are also drawn or painted with different colours which represents individuality and multiple cultures in my opinion. There are a lot fewer coloured people than there are black and white. I think the black and white represents every indigenous person directly effected by residential schools and how they were whitewashed into all being the same. They all have similar uniform type clothing, short hair which they most likely were forced to cut, and the same facial expressions. I think the grey colours represent being stripped of your culture, trauma, fear, and all the effects of the residential schools. I think the image is saying that out of an army of indigenous peoples that went through the residential schools what little culture remains. I found that the most significant symbol is braiding the colourful people wear in their hair. In the residential schools, the children were forced into cutting off their long braids. The braiding represents strength, individuality, and mean a lot to indigenous people.  Another significant symbol I found was the large feather that the child wearing purple was holding in her hand, the feather can mean many things but usually symbolizes trust, honor, strength, wisdom, power, and freedom. Seeing so many symbols and cultural pieces that the coloured people are holding shows how much was taken away from the children in residential schools who were holding nothing and wearing no cultural clothing in the picture, just a uniform, and short hair. The image was very well designed and had me looking at each person and intrigued me. I could see the fear and trauma on one half of the page, and the happiness, individuality, and culture on the other side of the page. I enjoyed analyzing this image and was impressed by how interesting this activity would be. I hope to get to appreciate and analyze more indigenous art and learn more about each culture.
