This unit in math we covered linear equations, we learned how to solve inequalities, and learned how to solve for x in equations with an equal sign or with a greater than or less sign. For my project I will be solving two different kinds of linear equations with different signs. For my first example I will be solving a number line equation. For my second example I will be determining the value of x.
For my number line equation the first step is to write the worded question as a linear equation.
“The temperature is at most-4 degrees Celsius.
we can determine that the equation includes-4, making the equation anything less than or equal to -4
To write that as a linear equation it would look like x≤-4
To place this on a number line determine your boundary point of -4, and draw your arrow facing the left towards any number less than or equal to -4, make sure you shade your dot to determine that it is also equal to.
For my second example I will be solving a linear equation to solve the variable.
3x+2=8
To isolate x we move the constant to the right side of the variable changing our equation to 3x=8 -2 which turns in to 3x=6
the next step is to divide the the coefficient by its self (divide by 3x) and we also divide 6 by 3x which isolates x making our answer x=2
For my next example I will be doing the equation 6x-5= 4x -17
like our example we want to isolate x to do so, we can swap the -5 and 4x
it is important to remember whenever a number goes over the equal sign it changes values.
Our new equation is 2x=-12
To isolate x we need to divide 2x by it’s self and divide -12 by 2x as well
After we have divided x has been isolated making our answer x=-6
