HCE 9- English Assignment: The power of acceptance of inclusivity

The following is an exploration of Birds On A Wire through an expository paragraph on the learning concept of inclusivity, acceptance and welcoming everyone.

Immigration is by definition a gesture of faith in social mobility. It is the expression in action of a positive belief in the possibility of a better life. Saying goodbye to the past and opening doors to a new life. Birds on a wire is created by the world-renowned artist Banksy. This is one of his art pieces which has a lot of  meaning to unpack related to that subject. This picture communicates the reality of how immigrants struggle in a new country. The unique, colourful bird looks different from the big, grey-coloured birds. Judging from the signs the big birds are holding the colourful bird has arrived from Africa hoping for a new beginning but isn’t being treated respectfully. The sign the grey birds are holding has disrespectful and unwelcoming comments written on them. The body language of the colourful bird seems to be withdrawn and distant from the other birds. This represents the impact those inconsiderate comments have made on the unique bird. Not only that, the entire painting is dull and monochrome. The bird that has arrived from Africa is portrayed in vibrant colours showing how different it is and stands out from the crowd.  Diving deeper into the meaning of this painting, one of the signs reads “Keep of our worms” The artist has connected that statement wonderfully to how immigrants are viewed in the real world. The big birds don’t want to share their worms with an outsider. This applies to the real world because people don’t want to share their resources and jobs with someone that isn’t a citizen of that place. They think of immigrants as outsiders, when in reality they are just human beings like everyone around them. Each bird is holding a sign that portrays the different point of views and thoughts people have on a person that doesn’t share the same physical and ethnic attributes as them. Several people have their own stereotypical comments imprinted in their heads and are stuck in that mindset just like those birds. In the painting, it is evident that the grey birds are represented in a smooth, rectangular box. This signifies their mindset being stuck in a box of conformity. They are stuck in that box and their vision isn’t going beyond it. The box is acting as a restriction and blinding them from seeing the beauty outside of it. Often times, these actions are influenced by their surroundings. In the painting, one of the grey bird’s has its head turned around. Based on its body language, the bird seems uncomfortable and unwilling to hold the sign. It seems as if it is pressurized to be in the situation and didn’t have any other options. It could have had a different opinion on the situation but is pressured to follow the chain. Unfortunately, this is also perceptible in our society today. People let others control their actions as they feel the need to fit in. Instead of being unique individuals, they are cemented in conformity unable to get out. This world would turn into the big, grey birds’ society if there wasn’t diversity. There are millions of people in this world, different sizes, ethnicities and cultures, but in the end, we are all human. Perhaps, if the grey birds welcomed that unique bird with open arms, their community could start mending and building a community that supports inclusivity and acceptance.

Fictional Safety Story

Summer break had just ended, all the students were returning to their schedules and attending school. Everyone was excited to have Mr. Robinson as their teacher and start the science unit! It was the first week of school and Mr. Robinson was going over safe conduct and what rules to follow in a laboratory. After that, he asked each student what their favourite laboratory equipment is and its function. One of the students put his hands up and announces, “My favourite science equipment is the Florence Flask. I like the Florence Flask because it has a cool name, and I also like its structure. It has a round body, flat bottom and I have used it before to hold and heat liquids.” To continue the discussion furthermore, another student participates and says, “My favourite science equipment is the Well Plate as it helps you mix very small chemicals together and helps you compare results.” Another student explains how their favourite was the Buret as they had used it to conduct one of their experiments with acids. A buret helps measure a specific amount of liquid. It also releases small amounts of acids/bases into solutions. Everyone was enjoying and listening to the discussion and Mr. Brown walks into the class. He also participates in the discussion and says, “My personal favourite is the Scoopula. It has the simple purpose of scooping solids/powder. I use a scoopula every day, and it is very helpful. Mr. Robinson, what is your favourite science equipment?” Mr. Robinson replies, “Well, I like dissecting, so my favourite is the forceps. While I’m conducting any dissection experiments these come in handy as they help in grasping the tissue or picking up small items during the dissection.” Time flew by and class came to an end.

The next day, Mr. Robinson directs everyone to the lab. He was happy because everyone had listened to his instructions and wore appropriate clothing. Everyone with long hair had their hair tied back, no one pulled out snacks and dangling jewellery was put in the bag. Just as Mr. Robinson was appreciating the class, a student walks in with her long not tied back, wearing sandals and shorts. She had just come back from Hawaii and was still stuck in the vacation mood. Mr. Robinson warned her to tie her hair back, wear proper clothing and substitute her sandal for shoes but she was being disobedient and didn’t follow Mr. Robinson’s instructions. Mr. Robinson introduced the new assignment, which was the Candle Lab. Everyone wore their safety goggles and began the experiment. Everything was going smoothly but the student who didn’t listen to Mr. Robinson and proceeded to not tie her hair got herself in trouble. She wasn’t paying attention during the experiment and her hair caught on fire. She panicked and ran to the fire extinguisher instead of telling Mr. Robinson first. This just made the problem even bigger, and the fire kept expanding. Mr. Robinson called 911 at once and she was taken to the hospital. Thankfully, apart from her hair, everything was intact. The lab was shut down for a couple of days for repair and Mr. Robinson went over what to do when a situation like this happens. He said, “That was very unsafe conduct and those injuries could have been so much major. In cases like these, I expect students to inform me first instead of running around the class. If anything like this occurs in the future, I expect students to make the right decision and demonstrate safe conduct.” Everyone was a little worried after that incident and to cheer students up and get them talking, Mr. Robinson brought up an ethical dilemma in science. He asked the class, “Does research cause more harm than benefit to humans and other organisms?” He gave the class a minute to discuss and asked each table group their thoughts on this question. Table group 1 comes up with a solid argument and explains, “We believe research is a positive thing. Research has brought humanity to where it is today. Without research and learning we wouldn’t have been able to come up with cures for complicated diseases for both humans and other organisms. Not only that, but research has also helped us develop efficient ways to help agriculture, the economy and the environment.” Table group 3 agrees with them. Table groups 2 and 4 however, disagree. They say, “There are always two sides to everything. We believe that research isn’t necessarily a positive thing. We believe it is more on the negative side. Research can be used for educational purposes but when in dangerous hands, it can destroy us. As research is expanding, it is also destroying us. Through research, we are creating scientific and technological advances. This research can be used for war or peace. Creating a machine to help the world or to destroy the world. Experimenting to cure a disease or spread a disease. Research is a dangerous thing and can cause a lot of harm to humans. It is important to understand the negative aspect of it too.” Everyone presented their thoughts on the dilemma excellently and the disastrous day turned into an entertaining class at the end. Just as students were packing up to leave the class, Mr. Robinson made an announcement and gave everyone a heads up for their test on the WHMIS symbols and Consumer Hazard test which will be happening in the next class.

Everyone arrived the next day and was handed the test, here’s an example of how the test looked,

Identify the following symbol and write it’s definition:

  1. : Any product with this symbol indicates that the product may cause a fire or an explosion if not handled properly.
  2. : Any product with this symbol indicates that the product is extremely hazardous and has potential to cause long-term health issues.
  3. : Corrosive: Dangerous; Product can burn skin and eyes and harmful if inhaled.
  4. : Explosive: Caution; Container/object can explode if heated or not handled properly. Also signifies chemicals with explosive properties.

Once everyone finished writing the test, Mr. Robinson took everyone back to the lab to continue their Candle Lab. This time, everyone wore appropriate clothing but one student kept his charging out in the open. Another student was walking with a lit candle and tripped over the charging cord. The charging cord caught on fire but this time, the student immediately informed Mr. Robinson and he took the right steps to extinguish the fire. No one panicked or caused any ruckus which is why the situation wasn’t major and no injuries happened.
It is important to take care of the little things in the lab because they can make a big difference. If everyone follows safe conduct, it will result in a safe environment and everyone can learn efficiently!

Community Connection

For my community connection assignment I interviewed Marco Arruda who is a referee manager for Port Coquitlam EURO-RITE FC. Before he became a referee manager, Marco was a referee manager he was aMarco Arruda National Assistant Referee who worked for the Vancouver Whitecaps MLS and Canadian Championship games for 4 seasons from 2012 – 2015.

I started refereeing at the age of 12 and my passion for it started growing overtime. I was a referee for the New West Club before I joined the Port Coquitlam Euro-Rite FC. Marco Arruda is a mentor and helps referees improve and succeed. I wanted to interview him because I love refereeing and it offers so many opportunities like gaining leadership skills and learning more about the sport I play which is soccer. Refereeing gave me a different perspective on the sport I play and helped me understand soccer from a different point of view. I became a referee because I wanted to understand soccer more but now I ref because I am passionate and want to become a highdarelle.com | Port Coquitlam Euro-Rite FC Dream Renovation Raffl... level referee in the future. Marco is someone who has experience in this field and I want to learn to advance to higher levels.

After interviewing Marco, I gained so much more knowledge about refeering. There were certain topics about refereeing I wasn’t certain about but after the interview, I took notes on those topics to improve.  For example, I wasn’t aware that we had to arrive 25-30 mins before the game. Now that I’ve learned that I will keep tips like those in mind.

Interview questions and answers:

Q1: Can you explain your roles and responsibilities with your current position?

A1: My roles and responsibilities as referee manager include: mentorship, education, certification and administration.

Mentorship involves observing referees in action and offering feedback. Education involves in-person and Zoom sessions covering the laws of the game and video analysis as well as field sessions covering fitness, awareness, positioning and teamwork. Certification involves making sure current referees are registered and attend an annual refresher course. Administration involves working with the club scheduler to ensure referees with the correct level of skill and experience are being assigned to relevant games.

Q2:  What obstacles have you faced to get where you are today?

A2: Obstacles that I have faced include balancing my role as referee manager with:

– my job as a highschool teacher

– my family that includes 2 young children (8 and 5)

Q3: What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?

A3: The advice that I would give to someone interested in what I am doing would be firstly to enjoy their refereeing career, stay engaged with the laws of the game and to continue to educate themselves about refereeing. Secondly, as a person moves to a stage in their refereeing career where they have enough experience that they could help others by sharing their experience, they could look for opportunities in their club to assist with mentoring and education. The best way to get involved would be to contact their club head referee.

Q4: Why are you passionate about your role?

Vancouver Whitecaps FC – Logos DownloadA4: I am so passionate about my current role because I am deeplyAll images committed to soccer refereeing.  I have been involved in refereeing for almost 30 years, beginning as a small-sided referee in the mid 1990s and peaking as a National Assistant Referee who worked a number of Vancouver Whitecaps MLS and Canadian Championship games for 4 seasons from 2012 – 2015. Now that I am a referee manager, my passion lies in helping young referees realize their full refereeing potential.

Q5: Was it always your goal to become a referee manager or is this something you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A5: It was not always my goal to become a referee manager, but now that I am one, I am humbled and honored to work with so many eager and engaged referees. When my career as a National Assistant Referee ended, I was approached by Poco Euro-Rite FC and I accepted their offer to become the referee manager for the club. This is a part-time role that I fulfill in addition to my job as a high school teacher.

What drew me to this role was the opportunity to give back to the game that has given me so much.

Q6: What tips would you give to beginner referees?

A6: Referee for the love of the game and not for money.  Arrive to your match 25-30 minutes before kickoff so that you can: perform a field inspection, check the equipment of players fromFootball Game Referee Doing Hand Signals Svg Png Icon Free Download (#57107) - OnlineWebFonts.COM both teams, deal with the game ball(s), warmup and do a coin toss. Wear your referee uniform (including your badge and pulled up socks) with pride. Dress for the weather, which means wearing layers in the late fall and winter. Practice your whistle tone and volume often, along with your signals and movement (get to the left, look between players). Ask questions if you are not sure about anything to do with the laws of the game or club/district specific rules. Communicate clearly, respectfully and confidently with players and coaches using both words and body language.  Watch and talk to more experienced referees to learn as much as possible.

Below, please find another question that I have answered in a previous interview of this nature:

What are some things that you would still like to accomplish in your time working as a referee manager?

Some things that I would still like to accomplish in my time working as a referee manager are: increased registration and improved level of refereeing. We currently have approximately 25Graph chart in color | Public domain vectors referees registered with Poco who are certified to referee 11-a-side games along with approximately 25 referees who are certified to referee small-sided games. My goal is to increase those numbers by 20% over the next 2 seasons (2023-24 and 2024-25), while lowering the average age of the 11-a-side referees by continuing to train teenagers and young adults.

Regarding level of refereeing, I have targeted a few referees interested in upgrading from district referee to regional referee and I am actively recruiting small sided referees to take the 11-a-side referee course this coming summer. I am also going to continue to run field sessions where referees of all ages and levels of experience can improve their skills.

After this interview, I have learned so much more on how to be a disciplined referee. Thank you Marco for taking the time to answer my questions. I learned so much!

I emailed and asked all the question (pics of the chat)-

How can bees and humans help each other?

My sway:

  1. List your 4-5 sub questions you tried to answer in order to research your topic?
  • What type of resources do bees provide to humans?
  • What human activities benefit bees?
  • What types of jobs do humans need to do in order to help sustain bees?
  • What is capitalist agriculture?
  • Do bees help humans medically?
  1. What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project?
  1. How did you verify and cite the information you found and show your research in a works cited?
  • I used a certified MLA citation generator to site all my sources. This citation generator is verified by experts and is a reliable source as I have used it in multiple classes. As for the other websites, I mainly used Gale as it is recommended by our school to use to it. I found it quite informative and educational. I struggled with it at the start as I put in my entire sub question but quickly learned that all Gale Searches only require a key word. In the destiny discoverer I also used Topic Finder. I also found Topic Finder easy to understand and used its information in one my slides. For websites I found on google, I made the website/article had the author’s name and all of its resources sited. I have learned that if a website sites where they got their information from it is always a positive sign. For my pictures, I used pexels and creative commons provided by sway. Both of them are good websites to get your pictures from. It was recommended for me to use it by several teachers. All my sources are reliable and I have made sure to double check the information with other websites if I wasn’t sure about the statistics or some of the information.
  1. How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you have done better?
  • I enjoyed doing this assignment as it allowed me to explore a new topic I wasn’t familiar with. I learnt a lot about bees and the process of beekeeping. Overall, I think I did okay on my assignment. I feel like there is always room for improvement and my assignment definitely has some things I would like to fix if I had more time. Some things I want to keep in mind for my next assignment are not overthinking and over doing things. For the initial stage of this assignment we were given a brainstorming sheet. I spent a lot of time on that sheet and put a lot of thought in the planning sheet. I think I would have saved so much time if I didn’t fill up so much information on the sheet. I am also a procrastinator. I need to fix that habit because at some point in life, I won’t be able to do my assignments last minute. For my future projects, I want to plan a timeline which I can strictly follow in order to efficiently finish my work.
