For my inquiry project, I want to work on my ability to recreate expressions.
I think I’ll be able to establish this by creating a self-portrait, as I have not done many of those before. I think it would be a good way to work on facial expressions because I, arguably of all people, know my own expressions and movement the best. Mx. Vittie suggested that I might want to project an image of myself yelling, smiling or presenting another strong emotion. If this is what I choose to do, depending on what materials are available or what I feel like doing when the time comes, I think I will paint the portrait which will preferably be a combination that is new to me, of acrylic paint and pastel, in an abstract style but also incorporating gothic suburbia (Tim Burton Style).
My plan for this week is to plan out sketches, and potentially test out different colour combinations that I think will work (which I will do once I find a picture that I want to reference). Once that is done, I will start to look for materials, which I already have planned in mind: A dark material to paint on (not canvas), ideally 18″ x 24″, such as a black painting surface or potentially a piece of wood if I can get my hands on one. I would use my own pastel colours, and if need be, my own acrylics. I presume that the brushes will be provided in class, although I own a few myself.
I think I will know that my painting is done when it resembles my initial sketch plans. The criteria for the completion will be:
- Does it represent a strong emotion that I relate to?
- Did I accomplish my goal of developing my ability to recreate facial expressions?
- Did I push myself out of my comfort zone by creating a. A portrait of myself b. A large painting?
- Am I satisfied with the end product; did I do my best?
Self-Assessment and Reflection
What was your goal for this week?
My goal for this week was to do my best to adjust to a new course, a new semester, and overall, a new subject that I haven’t really fully explored other than by myself at home.
What challenges did you face in completing your goal?
It was a bit challenging to adapt to being in a room full of strangers, which added to the awkward silence, as well as my laptop going haywire all week long.
How did you adapt to the challenges?
I adapted to the challenges by taking everything slow and doing my best to not get overwhelmed.
Did you achieve your goal this week?
I definitely achieved my goal for I find myself almost at home in this class. I feel very comfortable and eager to learn!
What is your goal for next week?
My goal for next week is to be responsible with my time to work in class in order to stay on track with the multiple projects we were already assigned. I think I will manage to achieve this goal, and moreover, I hope I can accomplish more work than I currently anticipate so that I can get extra time to do my best.
