Desmos Signature Math 2021

For our linear relations unit in Math 9 Honours, we made our own personalized signature using Desmos’s graphing software. As you can see in the image below, for my Math Art, I replicated my handwriting and added a frog with a hat that appears to have written the signature along with a heart next to it.

My main challenge was making the frog’s head, for making a circular/oval on a graph was a relatively unfamiliar concept. On the first few tries, I attempted to use multiple line segments to make a circle shape, but the results were always unsatisfactory to me. Next, I attempted to make a simple circle at the origin, which I figured out to be x^2+y^2=1. To place the frog’s head where I needed it to be, I merely added -40 for it to be placed at 40 on the x-axis and 5(y) to make the circle be in between 5 on the y axis and end at -5. Finally, I make the equation equal to 47, as that would determine the size of the circle. I also came to have challenges with the frog’s belly, for I could not manage to rid of the mirroring line segment at the other side of the x-axis, so instead, I just covered it with the frog’s hat’s brim enough so that it would cover the line segment.

I made my goal for this project to be a mainly independent task, although I did get help from my friends at first when we were just figuring out how to make curved line segments, which we quickly figured out to be to square the y or x. In the end, I’m really proud of the finished product, and that I managed to use my linear skills in order to create it.

This assignment made my understanding of slopes and line segments profound and in the end, lead me to have a bit of fun even though I normally despise graphing. I really enjoyed this project and hope we get to do similar projects in the future.
