Climate in Canada

— Heartland —

Effects of a warming climate:

The warming climate in the ‘Heartland’ brought out great impacts, changing the region’s biodiversity, ecosystems, and way of living. Warming climates have led to extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall which leads to floods and natural disasters. Biodiversity has been degrading due to being exposed to weather conditions that may not be typical for wildlife. Heatwaves have also been increased which may be problematic for certain species who may not have endurance for such weather. Climate change also causes biodiversity to be shifting toward the north, declining the population of animals in this region. A big part of Quebec and Ontario which is agriculture and forestry, has also been affected as crop cycles are disrupted.

Causes of a warming climate:

The causes of a warming climate in this reason can differ for many reasons including human, and natural causes. Greenhouse gas being emitted plays a role in climate change which is mainly carbon dioxide (CO2). Burning fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil, and coal releases large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, which is gradually causing the climate to change. Besides human activity, natural occurrences such as volcanic eruptions and the earth’s orbit around the sun can cause changes in specific areas in the world. The facts listed above show the problem of greenhouse gas being emitted and how much they can cause changes in the climate.

HCE 9 — English Write

Looking at this image, I can see a turtle in the sea with a garbage sign on the side of its shell. This picture shows the amount of disrespect and disregard humans have for turtles and their health. I think the author is trying to portray the idea of respect for ocean life and how they are not respected by humans. Turtle’s as creatures who play a major part in ocean life have become victims of the waste of humans. The creatures have been consuming trash for a long time now, causing great harm to their health and chance of survival. Plastic bags, plastic straws, and other trash are very commonly mistaken as food by the turtles, leading them to great consequences. Considering these problems, the picture above should be seen as a reminder of the great need to reuse and recycle so that turtles don’t have to consume our waste. The image shown above made me aware of the problems that arise within ocean life and how we need to make a change. Ultimately, this picture raises awareness of things ocean life has to go through, and how common it is for it to be disrespected.

Modeling Mitosis

Interphase: During interphase which is the longest stage, the cell carries out its normal functions like growth and DNA duplication in preparation for mitosis.

Prophase: The first stage of mitosis. It is when the nucleolus starts to dissolve and disappear, which then allows chromosomes to move freely. Spindle fibers also form within the cell.

Metaphase: The second stage of mitosis. it is when the chromosomes align in the middle of the cell.

Anaphase: The third stage of mitosis. It is when the centromere holding the sister chromosomes split, separating them into single chromosomes.

Telophase: The fourth stage of mitosis. It is when the chromosomes reach the sides of the cell and spindle fibers disappear. 2 nuclear membranes then form.

Cytokinesis: The final stage of mitosis: It is when the cell divides in two.

Edible DNA Lab

What is DNA: DNA is a molecule that has the genetic information needed for the development and function of living organisms. DNA is made out of 4 nucleotides such as adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). These nucleotides are arranged in a certain order to determine the functions of an organism. DNA has two strands of nucleotides that are twisted around each other to make a double helix. Hydrogen connects the nucleotides on one strand to their matches on the other strand. Adenine and thymine (A-T) and guanine and cytosine (G-C) are pairs.

What does DNA do: DNA has the genetic information that controls the development and function of an organism. It provides information for the cells of an organism such as eye color, height, hair color, etc. DNA also plays a role in cell division, which happens during mitosis. DNA gives cells information needed to develop an organism.

How easily does DNA copy itself: DNA replicates itself when the cell unwinds the DNA molecule and uses each strand as something to build another strand. It is a very accurate process, that almost can never fail.

What questions do I have: -Why do DNA defects take place? -How many DNA cells are in our bodies?

Answers I found to my questions: -DNA defects usually happen due to abnormal chromosomes. -The human body has 3.2 billion DNA cells

Connections-based Learning — Proposal Post

CoDesign: The person we connected with is Saul Mwame, who runs a beekeeping business named “Haven Bees”. He currently runs his beekeeping business in Tanzania, but he is yet to run it internationally. Something that interested me about the connection with Saul, would be his determination to do good for his country. He appeared on a broadcast for the UN explaining his plan to improve education for students in Africa. Additionally, Saul presented himself to our class on the Zoom call, and I felt interested in his goal for beekeeping and wondered how our class can help him out. However, a problem I wanted to address about Saul’s business would be the lack of promotion internationally, which may be a challenge for him.

“Nothing can stop me but me. I dream that one day I will establish an aerospace university in my country”

CoOperate: After doing some research on a solution for the problem I addressed, I have found many things that would help Saul expand his business. Firstly, spreading the word to family, friends, and associates, about Saul’s business can be a great help. Social media could be very helpful in raising awareness, as it is accessible to many. Also, hosting workshops or events related to Saul’s beekeeping business can possibly make many want to support him. Lastly, encouraging Saul to sell his beekeeping products internationally could go very well if he is determined to do it.

CoCreate: As I spent time brainstorming about a solution for the problem, I thought of a few things to promote Saul’s beekeeping business. One of them is to create posters with information about Haven Bees to display across the school. Another one was to use an Instagram account to promote Haven Bees. And lastly, I had an idea to make business cards for Haven Bees and distribute them to local businesses and/or markets that would possibly be interested. The one idea I decided to focus on was making an Instagram account with a group to promote Haven Bees. For this, I would need the skill of teamwork, working with a group that is assigned different tasks. As for materials, all I need is a device which is capable of doing research and posting on social media.

Commemorate: During the process of Connections-based learning, I was able to learn based on my interests, ideas, and experiences, which was one of the things I enjoyed most about the assignment. The process of making connections allowed me to expand my understanding of topics much better. Overall, I think this was a great experience because it allowed me to develop meaningful connections with my learning. As for the process of my post, I think the quality of it is good because I worked hard to add a good amount of information about everything I’ve done and gained knowledge about in this assignment. Lastly, one thing I could’ve improved on would be the quality of the Instagram account to promote Saul’s business. Me and my group could’ve done better with the design and organization of the account, as well as managing it. I’ll keep it in mind to work on these things harder next time.

Indigenous Exploration – “Kamloops Indian Residential School”

Indigenous Exploration – Kamloops Indian Residential School –

-When creating this assignment, I gained a lot of knowledge about what used to happen in residential schools. At first, I was assigned a group member to do this project with, however, due to a change of plans I had to do it by myself so that changed things up for me a little bit. But going through the research and assignment I started to get a hold of it.
-My path in research was slow at first but then I started to use better and more reliable sources and in the end, I think I got a decent amount of information.

-This assignment made me use my critical thinking skills, as I did not have much information on the Kamloops Indian Residential school in the past. I underestimated the mistreatment that happened against the Indigenous people, and how many could’ve been affected by what happened. I think doing this assignment changed my mind to think more about the tragedies that occurred and how important they really are.
