Why did George Orwell write 1984?

Eric Blair was the author of 1984 he was born in India in 1903 he then moved to England when he was a young kid. As a young adult, Blair moved to paris for a bit then went back to England he wanted to be drafted into the military but he wasn’t healthy and strong enough to serve so he joined the lower military where he lived. Eric Blair started going by the name George Orwell when he started writing books. Orwell is still a very recognized writer because of his book 1984 with that book he came up with new words and meanings that are still used to this day like Orwellian, Cold War, Big Brother, and more. Before Orwell was an author he was a broadcaster. Most of the books he wrote involved living in the conditions of a poor person and living conditions like the novel 1984 where the government was very in control of their citizens. Goerge Orwell wrote the book 1984 as a warning after the war that the government in the future could start to control society on another level and could turn life into a dystopia. Countries like Russia, Germany, and Spain are the governments that the book is based on. In the controlled governments people are being starved at high risk of poor health and very poor living conditions. Orwellian means when words or used in the wrong way and are being changed and limited to make you think differently and control your thoughts. Most people use the word Orwellian wrong because it’s very easily mistaken as authoritarian which means like a government-controlled dystopia that changes everything down to the way you think so everyone is the same and the way the government wants them to be.1984 is a cautionary tale because it was written in 1948 and is trying to warn the readers about the future how it could change and how the government can change for the worse and start to control all its citizens.

Canadian Public Broadcasting

Public broadcasting involves lots of different things like radio, television ect. Public broadcasting officially started in 1936 a while after the first world war. After WW1 companies started making public broadcasting so that if there was any breaking news it spreads quickly. CBC originally started in 1932 as CRBC and then the first television broadcast was in 1952 and their first online services was in 1993. An Advantage of having public broadcasting is that everyone in the country gets the same news as the same time so who ever wants to know can know what’s happening. Some people might not agree with public broadcasting because the government is heavily involved with it and changes things sometimes, so the government looks better. It could appeal to the modern audience by being more involved with social medias and different interests of the younger audiences.

Visual literacy means reading, writing and creating visual images. Being able to identify what is in the image and read the images of what’s going on in the image is also a part of visual literacy. The image that I chose is by Steve Cutts and it’s the earth and a doctor telling the earth that he has humans and the earth being shocked and scared because of the news he just heard. Normally in movies and tv shows when someone is in the hospital and is getting diagnosed with something they tell them to sit down and when you hear that you know something bad is going to happen. When the doctor tells the earth it has humans it basically says that humans and like a deadly disease or medical condition or something like that but for the earth. This piece is trying to say that we are a threat to the earth. It’s said that the earth is better off without us and that we don’t help it. This piece is trying to tell us that we need to make a change to our habits and how we treat the earth to be able to keep it. I don‘t think this piece has any physical value like money value because it’s a comic and I don’t think you can buy it. It does have value thought differently in a way that it’s very important to understand and really think about. The targeted audience for this is everyone that lives on the earth and who needs to take better care of it.
