Indigenous Exploration podcast – cultural appropriation

Welcome to our Indigenous podcast assignment. My group members, Daria, Diva and I chose the topic of culture appropriation of Indigenous tribes for our Indigenous Explorations assignment. In this podcast, we talk about what culture appropriation is and how we can avoid it.

This assignment was a great experience for me because it taught me many things I didn’t know about the Indigenous culture. For example, I found that sometimes Canadian tourist sites don’t always sell authentic, Indigenous-made artifacts which I think is really outrageous. I also learned that some people falsely claim that they have First-nation ancestry and appropriate the culture to gain attention.

This assignment was also a wonderful way for me to make new friendships and connect better with my friends Daria and Diva. When we first started this assignment, we used a document that our teacher Ms. Shong had shown us and we shared it between the 3 of us to write down information we found from the databases our librarian, Ms. Henderson had shown us. While researching, I found out that the Indigenous culture isn’t the only culture that has been appropriated, there are many other cultures that have been appropriated by people and I found very atrocious.

In the document we wrote down the information we found and how we would write it as part of our script and after 2 days of researching, we started writing our script. Thanks to the document, we were able to write out our script, divide it out evenly and make it sound like a conversation. When we finished writing the script, we started recording our podcast which helped lift our spirits while talking about a somber topic. All the mistakes we made helped cheer us up and bring us closer together. It took us 2 days to finish recording, and on the last day, we edited it and added sound effects to make the podcast sound better. Overall, I enjoyed learning new things and creating this podcast with my group members and I hope our podcast teaches you something new.

Core Competency

Critical thinking – How does your artifact (audio recording) tie in with what you have learned/knew before about the topic/issue? How has your thinking changed? What made it change?

I knew that since the settlers came to Canada around 400 years ago, the Indigenous people have been treated poorly because they were different for the settlers and I think that this podcast is a good way to create awareness of what happened to the First-nations people of Canada. This project was also taught me many things about culture appropriation and what it is. Before I started this project, I had no idea that Culture appropriation was something that was happening around us and that the Indigenous cultures were being disrespected because of it and that there is a difference between culture appreciation and culture appropriation. Now I know that culture appropriation is using artifacts from other cultures for your own benefit. I used to think that buying any artifact that was said to be Indigenous-made was authentic, but after researching I realized that sometimes what they say could be a false claim and it wouldn’t be helping the First Nations people at all. This assignment has taught me many things and I know now that I have to be more mindful of the artifacts I buy.
