Identifying a function is rather easy once you understand the concept of what a function and a relation is as well as knowing the difference between the two. A function is when “special” coordinates or the relationship between the y-axis and x-axis, when they only have one exact partner. A relation is when there is more than one partner and the connection between them.

This is a relation because it has more then one relationship between the inputs and the outputs. When a number from the y-axis has more then one relationship with the x-axis it is considered a relation.

This example is not a function either since there is a repeat with the x-axis. there is two x’s and one y related to it.

This example is a function considering that 1 relates to 4, 2 relates to 6, and 3 relates to 5. No repeats, and nothing being overlapping like: 7 relating to two other numbers on the y-axis. This is a special relationship between the two axis’s.
