The week before spring break we were taught how to solve polynomials. We began by learning about monomials which includes only one set of numbers and or variables. Solving these expressions it then becomes easier to figure out the terms (how many “groups” containing variables or numbers), the type ( based off of the amount of terms), the degree (the biggest exponent shown), and the model (model that is created from the expression).

Ways you can solve are using visual, or doing most of it in your head.

Visually:

  • basic model using colored squares, and rectangles.
  • area model

Or…

Algebraically

Step 1: Solving (visually)

Algebraically:

Which ever way you choose will get 4x-2x.
