“Lord of the Flies” – Island Description

(The following are quotes based on the setting of Lord of the Flies)

the Beach-“The shore was fledged with palm trees. These stood or leaned or reclined against the light and their green feathers were a hundred feet up in the air. The ground beneath them was a bank covered with coarse grass, torn everywhere by the upheavals of fallen trees, scattered with decaying coconuts and palm saplings”(Golding 7).

Sea and the lagoon-“Out there, perhaps a mile away, the white surf flinked on a coral reef, and beyond that the open sea was dark blue. Within the irregular arc of coral the lagoon was still as a mountain lake–blue of all shades and shadowy green and purple. The beach between the palm terrace and the water was a thin stick, endless apparently, for to Ralph’s left the perspectives of palm and beach and water drew to a point at infinity; and always, almost visible, was the heat”(Golding 10).

The Coral Reef-“The reef enclosed more than one side of the island, lying perhaps a mile out and parallel to what they now thought of as their beach. The coral was scribbled in the sea as though a giant had bent down to reproduce the shape of the island in a flowing chalk line but tired before he had finished. Inside was peacock water, rocks and weeds showing as in an aquarium; outside was the dark blue of the sea. The tide was running so that long streaks of foam tailed away from the reef and for a moment they felt that the boat was moving steadily astern”(Golding 14).

The jungle-“Beyond falls and cliffs there was a gash visible in the trees; there were the splintered trunks and then the drag, leaving only a fringe of palm between the scar and the sea. There, too, jutting into the lagoon, was the platform, with insect-like figures moving near it. Ralph sketched a twining line from the bald spot on which they stood down a slope, a gully, through flowers, round and down to the rock where the scar started”(Golding 12).

meeting place-“The sun slanted in and lay golden over half the platform. The breezes that on the lagoon had chased their tails like kittens were finding their way across the platform and into the forest. Ralph pushed back the tangle of fair hair that hung on his forehead” (Gooding 12).

The cliff-“The most usual feature of the rock was a pink cliff surmounted by a skewed block; and that again surmounted, and that again, till the pinkness became a stack of balanced rock projecting through the looped fantasy of the forest creepers” (Golding 34).

Scar:“Behind this was the darkness of the forest proper and the open space of the scar”(Golding 4).

Site where piggy and Ralph find the conch-“Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon. Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds” (Golding 18).

The island-“It was roughly boat shaped: humped near this end with behind them the jumbled descent to the shore. On either side rocks, cliffs, tree-tops and a steep slope: forward there, the length of the boat, a tamer descent, tree-clad, with hints of pink: and then the jungly flat of the island, dense green, but drawn at the end to a pink trail. There, where the island petered out in the water, was another island; a rock almost detached, standing like a fort, facing them across the green with one bold, pink bastion.” (Golding 27)

Forest + lagoon :”a great platform of pink granite thrust  up uncompromisingly through forest and terrace and sand lagoon to make a raised jelly four feet high”(Golding 6)

“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” Narrative

“He took one last drag on his cigarette and snapped it away. Then with that faint, fleeting smile playing about his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and disdainful, Walter Mitty the Undefeated, inscrutable to the last.”

“On the count of three, open fire!” yelled one of the gunman. In the moment the gunman pulled the trigger, one of the other gunmen stepped forward and shouted “wait!”, but it was too late, bullets have been flying out. As soon as the bullet hit Mitty, the strange scene took place and the bullet disappeared! “No!!”…

“What’s wrong with you?”Mrs.Mitty screeched as she stood in front of a dazed Mitty, her head cocked to one side, her eyes screwed and glaring at him. “Sorry…I was…” Suddenly he felt the burning from his hand, he looked down at his hand, the cigarette had been exhausted, and he quickly threw away the butt. “I have to go buy another pack quickly, wait in the car for me.” Mrs. Mitty turned and walked to another shop. He did not return directly to the car, but was attracted to a toy store. He walked into the toy store, greeted by a variety of plush toys on the shelves, princesses, puppies and kittens…Going inside again is a shelf, a boy standing in front of the shelves, he looked to the shelves, showing a set of superhero series of toys. The little boy might have noticed someone around him, turning his head to look at Mitty, “Do you also like superheroes? Who is your favorite hero?” The little boy blinked his big eyes and his eyelashes fluttered. “Um … Spiderman.”This is not Mitty’s favorite hero, but he only knows this hero. “My favorite is SpiderMan, too. He is a good man and has helped a lot…

“Witches haunted, three children have been missing, super Mitty we need you!” Said the radio. “It seems not peaceful recently.” Mitty lit a cigarette, looking dignified. He wanted to go straight home, but he changed course and ran to the edge of the city. He runs faster and faster, run faster, until the body becomes illusory. The edge of the city is full of Coreopsis. “The girl caught today is not bad …Mi. . . Mitty! How did you find this place? ” To which his only reply would be a disdainful and Inscrutable smile.

Mitty suddenly appeared, looks straight at the witch, at this time he raised a blue flame between his palms, “No…!”

In this space, he was left alone.

Plot Point Photo Compilation

1) Exposition

Quote: “Because I do not sleep well I hear my father rising to go to work. I know that in a few minutes he will come in to look at me sleeping. He will want to check that I came home last night. He will sand in his bare feet, his shoes and socks in his hand, looking at me. I will sleep for him… This is my son who let me down. I love him so much it hurts but he won’t talk to me. He tells me nothing” (MacLaverty 165).

Explanation: The quote presented: introduces characters, their personalities and views towards one another. The father’s anxious nature is hinted at by his sons explanation of how father constantly checks on him in his sleep “to check that [His son] came home” (MacLaverty 165). As well as his fear the quote shows his discontent of their current relationship and his untold love for him. However, the son isn’t as well defined in this exposition quote. Though, it does show his care or at the least pity for his father as he will “sleep for him’ (MacLaverty 165).

2) Inciting Incident

Quote:”My son is breaking my heart. It is already broken… If I leave him alone he will break my heart anyway. I must speak to him…

‘What do you be doing out to this time?’ ‘

Not again.’

‘Answer me.’

‘ Talking.’

‘Who with?’

‘Friends, just go to bed, Da, will you?’

‘What do you talk about?’

‘Nothing much.’ ‘

‘talk to me, son’” (MacLaverty 166).

Explanation: The quote presented this information: The father intends to talk to his son because his son hurt his feelings, which is why they are arguing. Because of this argument leads to the following events.

3) Rising Action

Quote: “‘ I let you go once- and look what happened.’… For two years I never heard a scrape from you…Then a doctor phoned for me at work. ‘I had to go collect you. Like a dog.’…Socks, drawers, shits, the lot. In a carrier-bag. The doctor said he had to burn what was on you. I made you have your girl’s hair cut. It was Belfast before we spoke. You had the taint of England in your voice” (MacLaverty 167-168)

Explanation: This extract from “Father and Son” is the father’s recollection of an event prior to the story. It briefly describes the time when the Father’s son disappeared for two years. This quote of course expands our knowledge of the son’s background and perhaps why their relationship has become what it is now, and in turn adding tension.

4) Rising Action

Quote: “My son, he is full of hatred. For me, for everything. He spits when he speaks. When he shouts his voice breaks high and he is like a woman. He grinds his teeth and his skin goes white about his mouth. His hands shake. All because I ask him where he goes. Perhaps I need to show him more love. Care for him more than I do… My son I am sorry. I do it because I love you” (MacLaverty 168)

Explanation: The quote expands once again on their relationship, both from the Sons point of view and the father’s. This is a very explicit example of the son’s attitude and actions towards his father; and it is clear his Father is aware of his feeling. Nonetheless the Father loves his son more than anything despite his apparent hatred for him. This makes readers sympathize with the father, only making the latter scenes more devastating.

5) Rising Action

Quote:”The door Swings open and he pushes a hand-gun beneath the pillow. Seen long enough, black and squat, dull like a garden slug. He sits, my son, his hands idling empty, staring hatred. ‘Why do you always spy on me, you nosey old bastard?’ His voice breaks, his eyes bulge.

‘What is that? Under your pillow?’

‘It is none of your business.’ He kicks the door closed in my face with his bare foot”(MacLaverty 169).

Explanation:The relationship between father and son is still poor. The father monitors his son because he loves his son so much but this is exactly what the son hates. The father discovered the gun under his son’s pillow while they were arguing. This gun is a foreshadowing

6) Climax

Quote: “There is a ring at the door. The boy answers it, his shirt-tail out. Voices in the hallway. My son with friends. Talking. What he does not do with me. There is a bang… Not believing, I look into the hallway…My son is lying on the floor, his head on the bottom stair, his feet on the threshold” (MacLaverty 169).

Explanation:The quote presented this information: The author describes in detail the situation of the son when he was killed, and from the father’s point of view of this event.

7) Falling Action

Quote: “‘Are you hurt?’ Blood is spilling from his nose. They have punched you and you are not badly hurt. Your nose is bleeding. Something cold at the back of your neck”(MacLaverty 169).

Explanation:The quote presented this information: After the gunshot, the father found his son lying in a pool of blood, the father comforting his son is not serious injuries, from here you can see that the father can not accept this matter, so self-comfort.

8) Denouement

Quote: “I take my son’s limp head in my hands and see a hole in his nose that should not be there. At the base of his nostril. My son, let me put my arms around you” (MacLaverty 169).

Explanation:The quote presented this information:The father did not cry and did not respond to the death of his son, only made what he always wanted to do’ My son, let me put my arms around you.’ Although the feelings of this quote is very flat, we can still feel the father’s sadness and his deep love for his son.

Character Sketch – Two Fishermen

Michael Foster from the short story the “Two Fishermen” wasa tall, long-legged, eager young man, he is a young up-and-coming journalist who works for small town newspaper. Michael wanted to go to the city some day and work on an important newspaper, he was an well educated middle to upper class citizen. Michael is an single man, however he has many relationships around town like the people that work at the sherif’s office, newspaper worker, towns people, and the hotel workers. Michael is a dishonest man, who is willing to lie for his job and is very good at manipulating others. Smitty had a reputation as being the bad guy because he was the hangman and Michael didn’t want to associate himself with Smitty. When Smitty was being bullied by the towns people after hanging Thomas Delaney, but Michael does not stand up for Smitty, he was worried about the mood of the towns people, he is a coward.

Capital Punishment in “Two Fishermen”

-Capital punishment was removed from the Canadian Criminal Code in 1976, it was replaced with a mandatory life sentence without possibility of parole for 25 years for all first-degree murders. If the story “Two fisherman” was based in Canada, Thomas Delaney’s crime did not fit the criteria of capital punishment in Canada during 1962.

-In the short story “Two Fisherman” by Morley Callaghan, Thomas Delaney should have been killed for his actions in defending his wife. He had killed old Mathew Rhinehart, whatever the reason, the result is that he killed a person. In order not to break the law, although in this case, this decision was unfair to the murderer, but he has to be sanctioned by the law. Thomas Delaney knew that kill people will Breaking the law, but he still did, so he is responsible for his actions.

The Magic of Light

This infinity mirrors room is achieved by using a flat mirror.

We all know that a plane mirror reflects light onto an object, creating an image of the object above. Each side of the room has a flat mirror covering its entire area, and each mirror is completely parallel to the mirror. The two mirrors mirror each other, causing the mirror to constantly reflect the other’s image, resulting in an endless room. This room use this, put all kinds of lights in the room, the result seems to be a room without end, but in fact it is just a small room, by continuous reflection mirror. in short, no room at the end of a illusion is a cube structure internal planar mirror reflection of the light cast on them as an object, and reflection to another object, create numerous images.

Nuclear Debate: My Perspective

I think nuclear energy has a good side and a bad side. Nuclear energy is good or bad depending on where you use it.

Advantages:

Stable operation of the nuclear power, unlike wind power is highly affected by the external environment of water and electricity, nuclear power now generally 18 months refueling, need to shut down 2 ~ 3 weeks, the other time mostly in full power operation, is now a one million mw unit, the output value is about ten million yuan a day.
Unlike fossil fuels nuclear power generation as massive emissions of polluting substances into the atmosphere, so nuclear power does not cause air pollution. Nuclear power does not produce increase carbon dioxide earth’s greenhouse effect, nuclear fuel energy density than fossil fuels millions of times on high, so the nuclear power plant fuel used by small size, transportation and storage are very convenient, a 1 billion – megawatt nuclear power plant takes 30 tonnes of uranium fuel a year, a voyage transport aircraft can be completed.

Disadvantages:
Nuclear power plants produce high and low levels of radioactive waste, or spent nuclear fuel, although it is small in size, but because of it.
Radiation, therefore, must be carefully handled and faced with considerable political difficulties. The thermal efficiency of nuclear power plants is low, so it is more waste heat than the general fossil fuel power plants. Therefore, the thermal pollution of nuclear power plants is more serious.
The construction of nuclear power plants is more likely to spark political discord.
There is a large amount of radioactive material in the reactor of the nuclear power plant. If it is released into the environment in the accident, it will be made to the ecology and the people.
To damage.
