    He hired William Van Horne who worked on his local railway from a young age, George Stephen and Donald Smith who each pledged their entire personal fortunes to provide money for the construction.

    He promised them $25 million in cash, 25 million acres, and a monopoly west of Lake Superior for 20 years.

    The Syndicate was to complete the railway within 10 years.

    The Syndicate changed the route of the railway, a route that ran through the fertile land between Saskatoon and Edmonton. Because the northern Prairies had good farmland, many land speculators had moved into the area and bought land they hoped would be near the rail line.
  7. Why was William Van Horne hired as the new manager of the CPR in 1881?
    He was hired to speed the construction process up because it was going to slow at the beginning.
  8. Describe the achievements of Van Horne’s management.
    Van Horne began cutting expenses. He decided to use temporary wooden trestles and bridges to continue the line over difficult terrain. They could be built quickly, were cheaper than metal bridges, and they could be replaced by more permanent structures later.
  9. What problem did the railway face in 1883 and what was the solution?
    The railway was running out of money and the government had to invest more money to finish the construction.

    It enters BC at Kicking Horse Pass.
  11. In 1867, why do you think the coast of BC required fewer days to get to from Ottawa than the interior of BC?
    They would travel by water which was faster form of transportation.
