Literature Photo Project

paragraph:Our group chose the sound of thunder, written by the American writer ray Bradbury. The story is about a man named Eckels, who wants to go back to ancient times, to hunt a dinosaur, and then on the special road that day because of the tension and fear, leads him out of the road and eventually to the butterfly that has been dead in modern times. It’s just a butterfly, but it changes the whole history, the culture, the way people are supposed to look. The project itself is to let us know more about the novel, the sound of thunder can enrich people’s imagination and give play to their creativity, is a very good novel.

Brainstorm Section
a) Exposition
– Quote: “The sign on the wall seemed to to be moving under a thin film of warm water. Eckels closed his eyes for a moment, the sign burned in his memory:

TIME SAFARI, INC. SAFARIS TO ANY YEAR IN THE PAST. YOU NAME THE ANIMAL. WE TAKE YOU THERE. YOU SHOOT IT”(pg 1).
– Explanation: Eckelswanted to shoot a dinosaur, so he came to the Time Safari.

b) Rising Action Example #1
– Quote:“Taking you back sixty million years to shoot the biggest game in all of Time”(pg 1).
– Explanation: When Mr. Eckel was still hesitant, the official used this sentence to motivate him. Let him finally make the decided to go to the past and shoot the dinosaur in the world.

c) Rising Action Example #2
– Quote: “He looked as if he could not understand what was happening and took a few small steps. ‘Not that way”(pg 6).
– Explanation: When Mr. Eckel really saw the biggest dinosaur, he thinks he cannot kill it in anyways. He misses up and don’t know what he should do but his body still reacting in the first place that is moving a step, however this step is out of the circle where he should be.

d) Rising Action Example #3
– Quote: “The thunder died away. The jungle was silent. After the avalanche, a green peace. After the nightmare, morning”(pg 6).
– Explanation: The biggest dinosaur got killed by other hunters’ high skill, everything is done, they will go back to the real time.

e) Climax
– Quote: “The sign had changed: TYME SEFARI INC. SEFARIS TU ANY YEER EN THE PAST. YU NAIM THE ANIMALL. WEE TAEK YU THAIR. YU SHOOT ITT”(pg 9)
– Explanation: When they go back to the real time, they felt a little bit strange, look clearly they found out the way how people speech is change.

f) Falling Action
– Quote: “Stuck in the mud was a brightly colored butterfly, very beautiful and very dead”(pg 9).
– Explanation: They all looking for the reason, they found a dead beautiful under Eckel’s shoes.

g) Denouement
– Quote: “He did not move. Eyes shut, he waited, shivering. He heard Travis breathe loudly. He heard Travis lift his rifle, click the safety catch, and raise the weapon”(pg 10)
– Explanation: Travis very angry about Eckel change the world because of he didn’t listen to him. So he killed Eckel and wants to change the world back.
– Photo Idea:

h) Physical Setting

– Quote:”Outside,” Travis pointed, “is the jungle of sixty million two thousand and fifty-five years before President Keith”(pg 2).

– Explanation: This sentence indicates the place and time of the event, so he is physical setting.

– Photo Idea:

I) Emotional Setting (nervous, scared)

– Quote:

“Don’t run,” said Lesperance. “Turn around. Hide in the Machine.”

“Yes.” Eckels seemed unable to move. He looked at his feet as if trying to make them walk. He gave a cry of helplessness.

“Eckels!”(pg 2).

-Explanation: Eckels’ movements show that he is very nervous and afraid. Therefore, he is scared and nervous

j) Conflict Type (person VS. nature)

– Quote:”First a day and then a night and then a day and then a night, then it was day-night-day-night. A week, a month, a year, ten years! A.D. 2055. A.D. 2019. 1999! 1957! Gone! The Machine roared. They put on their oxygen helmets and tested the radios”(pg 2).

– Explanation: Eckels and others sit in the time machine to kill dinosaurs and go back in time, and go back in time and do the opposite of the laws of nature.

– Photo Idea:

k) Ending type (Twist ending)

– Quote:”But the immediate thing was the sign painted on the office wall, the same sign he had read earlier today on first entering. Somehow, the sign had changed”(pg 9).

– Explanation: Because the butterflies have always come from ancient times, they have led to changes in people’s appearance, characters and history, which is a kind of ending form that twists the ending.

– Photo Idea:

l) Irony Example

– Quote:Situational Irony

“The man behind the desk laughed. “You joking? You know very well. Deutscher, of course! Who else? Not that weak fool Keith. We have got an iron man now, a man who isn’t afraid of anyone or anything!” The official stopped. “What’s wrong?”(pg 1).”

– Explanation: The end of the article turned out to be the opposite of what I had imagined, and it ended with the Germans becoming President, not the original man.

m) Suspense

– Quote:”Mr. Eckels looked at the check. There was a small movement of his fingers”(pg 1).

– Explanation: Eckels is anxious about the uncertain state of things that might go back to hunting.
