Foods 12 September Lab Reflection

It’s been one month since I took the Food And Nutrition 12 class. We made a lot of food every day and we have fun. It is always the most relaxing and exciting class of my whole day and I’ve learned a lot!!! The lab I want to reflect the most is the Biscotti and Lattes. Because it was the first product I made with my new group and we had a lot of fun. Angel thought that the color of the biscotti looked like some kind of animal called ‘Macaco’ in Spanish, so he called ‘Macaco’, which has a very strange but funny pronunciation. Then we all started to call it ‘Macaco’. This is a joke that only we can get, hahaha.
This lab is not very hard. Here is the mise-en-place:

I cut the almonds and washed some bowls. We used an electric whisker to combined the butter and other solid ingredients, I tried it, it was heavy and after about 2 minutes I was exhausted, Sofia helped me with it, she’s a very nice person. And Daniel and angel helped us to shape the dough, which was not very good looking. Anyway, cooperation plays a very important part in the teamwork, I think a person can do anything if he is in an organized group. In our group, whenever someone has a problem, others always help him or her, so we didn’t have any problem at all.

The next day Ryan and Sofia cut it and we tasted it with the hot chocolate and coffee we made. It was not as sweet as I thought before, because it was my first time to eat the biscotti. And the coffee was great but I thought the biscotti should be had together with something sweeter than Mocha. So, if I do it next time, I may put a little more sugar in it and have it with a sweeter drink. But it’s always good to eat the food you made by yourself, so it had a good taste in my opinion.

Foods 12 Waste Plan

Food wasting has always been a very serious problem. We eat food every day, but nearly nobody even notice that problrm. There’s always a lot of food waste that we can’t even realize in our daily life. For example, I live in a big house with some other Chinese students, we have a teacher who takes care of our food and drink. Every weekend he goes shopping and buys a lot of beverages and food for us. Sometimes the fridge is too full to contain more, he put other stuff into the cupboard, and they turn rotten then he has to throw them away. Also, he makes everyone lunch, and we can’t always eat them up. So it’s a waste too. And it’s kind of embarased to throw food in front of so many other students.
First of all, I have to remind him not to buy so much in the future, or maybe try to go shopping twice a week; second, he needs to buy more food with longer expirations, this is good to improve the situation that we have in our house; what’s more we should tell him that we can’t eat too much for lunch and let him make less food for our lunch. It’s such a surprise that i haven’t realized that until today. Anyway everyone should take a step and make a contribution to stop wasting food.

1.Fire

     (1)Use Fire extinguisher!

     The fire extinguisher is uesd for all types of fire!~

     (2)NEVER pour WATER on a grease fire!!!

2.Burns/Scalds

      (1)put the burnt area cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes (DO NOT use ice or iced water!!!)

     (2) Go to the hospital  when  you’re burnt by any electrical equipment

3.Chemicals

      (1)NEVER mix household cleaners together!!

         (2) If you eat food which has mould on it……you may  die!!!

4.Slips/Trips/Falls

      (1)Remember to use a rug with NON-SKID back!

         (2)wear comfortable, properly fitted shoes

5.Cuts 

      (1)When mincing, keep the tip of your knife on the cutting board and pump the handle up and down quickly

(2) If you cut yourself accidently,  use direct pressure to stop the bleeding

6.Heavy Lifting

     (1)Clear the path you intend to take

       (2)When lifting, bend the knees and use the legs to lift.  Never lift things heavier than yourself !

7.How to Prevent Food Poisoning

      (1)Carefully wash your hands often, and always before cooking or cleaning.

        Always wash them again after touching raw meat~

(2)DO NOT use foods that have an unusual odor or a spoiled taste

8.Waste Management

    (1)Waste storing!!!

      (2)A paper towel with dirt, water, or plant-based food is perfectly welcome in your        

9.Personal Hygiene

     (1)No coughing, sneezing, spitting over food,No smoking

      (2)Hair should be tidy and covered where necessary to prevent the risk of it falling into food.
