NEWCOMEN’S STEAM ENGINE

-built in 1712

-Heated water to push a piston up and down

-built to fix common problems in mines

-Pumped trickling water from the ceiling out of the mine

-Used coal burning and turning water into gas

-Used for very deep mines to allow miners to work.

-The first steam engine, but it didn’t work very well.

WATT’S STEAM ENGINE

-Nicknamed “Old Bess”

-Built in 1760 by James Watt

-Powered factory machines

-Used turbines to enhance the power

– Similar to a kettle, the water boils and steam is produced

-Gas/vapor spins the turbine and spins the wheel, generating power

-Was very revolutionary and was the center of factory power.

-1783 was used in textile factories

-1800, over 500 Watt engines were in use

-Made from an old newcomen engine

-Heated water using coal and the vapor spins a turbine around
