ENGLISH REVOLUTION SIGNIFICANT EVENTS TIMELINE

ENGLISH CIVIL WAR

CAUSES

Charles not ruling acording to law was the most significant cause because it acumilates every other cause. When he obtained money without parliament’s consent is technically ruling illegally. Charles’ advisors were unpopular because of illegal or selfish actions inflicted by the king. Strafford’s Fork is a perfect example of ruling not according to law. Strafford’s Fork was a illegal method of obtaining money for Charles’ army. The king used the court of star chamber to illegally prosecute people.

                                           COMPONENTS

The battle of marston moor was a significant part of the civil war. It was significant because it was the first battle won by the roundheads. I feel it was the 1st push for Cromwell and was the start of the victory for the roundheads.

The battle of Naseby was the turning point for the parlimentary army. Both sides had equal land and the battle of naseby gave the parlimentarians the advantage they need to win the civil war.

When Charles I escaped it secured victory for the parlimentary army. With their main leader gone, the roundheads could capture land a lot easier and win.

                                             CONSEQUENCES

Charles trial convicted the king for his crimes and was setanced to death be severed head. His trial and executionstarted the republic that Oliver wanted. If Charles had not been put on trial, he may have resumed power, but with parliment doing all the work.

Cromwell decided that he was to rule in a republic and esablished military districts. This made people mad as he was ruling very forcefully.

He also imposed the blue laws. Being a puritan, Cromwell wanted everything to be low key. So he banned wresting matches, jousing, Theatre and many other fun things. This also made people upset who weren’t puritan because that is not their way of doing things.

Charles II came and Ruled by parliments side. During this rule, parliment passeed the “Test Act” which said Catholics couldn’t hold positions of power. Charles II was secretly a catholic and his heir and brother, James, was also a catholic. This will shape how James will rule

When James started ruling he ruled brutally. His rein was known as th Bloody Assizes because of the brutal things done to his opponents. Parliment hated this and brought in Mary and her husband  William of Orange to rule.

When Mary and William ruled, they agreed to the Bill of rights, which gave the public some rights. This was great because the public never had a voice before.
