Resources on the N Word

We’ve had some great class discussions during this unit, but we haven’t gotten into this word too much because  I (Ms. W) have a hard line against using it myself. While I still believe this should be a rule for those of us who are not People of Colour, I want you to make up your own mind. Feel free to read through the below resources and research your own. It took me a long time to get to the place I am with my own privilege and I have done a lot of reading and thinking about this, but I invite you to do the same and make your own conclusions.

That being said, do not use the word at school.

  • Reaction Survey
    • Write your name next to the word on the board that most describes how you feel about the Guilty Verdict for Tom Robinson
    • Discussion: Explain your reaction. Why do you feel that way?
  • Read Ch. 22 – audiobook or volunteers?
  • T-chart: Compare the reactions of the white population to the reactions of the black population. Why do people react this way? What does their reaction say about each character? Differentiate between direct and indirect characterization.
  • Reflection paragraph: Why does Miss Maudiemake a small cake for Scout and Dill but give Jem a piece from a large cake? What does this say about Jem’s experience with the verdict?”
    • Extension prompt: Why did Lee devote so many chapters to the trial when Tom Robinson was doomed to be found guilty? Who is really on trial; Tom Robinson or the Maycomb population?
