Chemistry 12 Candy Lab

Mass of gummy candy: 9.51 g

Chemical needed: 0.1M NaOH solution, sour gummy candy, pH indicator-phenolphthalein

Equipment: Graduated cylinder, weigh boat, scale, beakers, string rod, burette, conical flask, pH indicator, pipette, hot plate.

Procedure:

  1. Put safety goggle on.
  2. Put the weigh boat on a scale and use tear function to set the original weight to zero, take out gummy candy that contains tartaric acid, and put them on the weigh boat to get the mass of the gummy candy.
  3. Measure 100 ml of water and put it into a beaker, put the candies into the beaker and dissolve by using the hot plate.
  4. Set the hot plate to 100 Celsius degree and use the string rod to stir the solution to make it dissolve faster.
  5. Once the solid part is fully dissolved, set up the titration station. Fill the burette with 0.1 M NaOH solution.
  6. Measure 20 mL of the acid solution, pour the 20 mL solution into the conical flask and use a pipette to drop 5 drops of phenolphthalein into the solution.
  7. Record initial volume of NaOH in the burette, and start dropping the NaOH solution. When the solution in the flask turns to light purple, stop dropping the NaOH and record the end volume, calculate the NaOH used.
  8. Repeat step 6, 7 for 3 times and record the result.

Experiment # Acid solution NaOH solution used Initial NaOH End NaOH
1 20 mL 4.9 mL 0.9 mL 5.8 mL
2 20 mL 5.1 mL 5.8 mL 10.9 mL
3 20 mL 5.0 mL 10.9 mL 15.9 mL
4 20 mL 5.0 mL 15.9 mL 20.9 mL

Average NaOH used is = 5.0 mL

M1V1 = M2V2

[OH-] = 0.1 M · 0.005 L = M2 · 0.025L

M2 = 0.02 M

[H30+] = M1 · 0.02 L = 0.02 M · 0.025L

M1 = 0.025 M

pH = -log (0.025) = 1.6

Analysis: According to the pH scale, the pH of tartaric acid in the gummy candy is 1.6, a fairly strong acid.

Should university lower the G.P.A. requirement for students entering post-secondary education?

.        The G.P.A requirement for students’ entrance of universities should not be decreased. As more and more students want to get into post-secondary educations, the high G.P.A. requirement stops many students from entering universities or college. But it is necessary for those post-secondary education institutions to have the top portion of the overall students. For universities and colleges, they may not know the applicants’ personalities or behaviors. However, the G.P.A. is the only thing they can refer to. Universities and colleges must keep the requirement high enough to get better quality of students. Also, when higher quality students come into the post-secondary education, the institution can focus to provide better education as well. However, there is 1.7 million students at Canadian universities in 2016, and 1.6 million jobs were created for universities students between 2008 and 2017. In this case, more technical talents are needed for modern society. Though 1.6 million jobs were created for university students, it is almost three times those created for graduates of all other types of post-secondary education combined. When more and more students become the one doing theory-based job, less and less people would be doing the works. This will lead to lack of people with technical talents, so universities’ G.P.A. requirement must be in a high level to prevent this circumstance from happening. For universities, likewise, any other post-secondary institutions, it would have a higher difficulty compare to secondary school. Without the ability to get high G.P.A. in secondary school, it is hard to achieve in post-secondary education. Most of the times universities and colleges are easy to enter but hard to graduate. When the G.P.A. requirement is high enough, applicants can gain some awareness of the hard-works expected in universities or college. The high G.P.A. requirement can also make applicants think deeply about entering universities or not. In those cases, post-secondary institutions’ G.P.A. requirement should not be lowered.

Letter to Mr. Bennett

To Prime Minister Bennett:
I was lucky to get a chance to travel across the Canada this time. With starting my trips from BC, I know a lot of people lost their jobs due to the great depression, I can see a lot of relief camps were built to help those people who lost their jobs. People in the camps are stratifying with all the supply they can get from working like logging in the forest or building some sort of public transportation. I feel like the people in the camps were doing so much work but only get paid so little, hope you had notice that, I am worrying about strike will happened dur to the 44 hours work in a week. And for the next few days, when I was on my way to Ottawa, the worst things that I expected is happening, all those tired camp workers wan to go to Ottawa to have a strike, they climbed on the unprotected train only for getting Ottawa. Hopefully Mr. Bennett could solve this issue. I also saw that those churches are helping the people who lost their jobs, they opened something call “Soup Kitchens” to provide people a warm meal, unfortunately, some churches were against women- they only provide breakfast for men, like in Pogey. The effects of the great depression are obviously in all the provinces across Canada, homeless people were all laying on the street, a scene I ever seeing in my entire life. Especially for those farmers in the Prairies. The life quality of famers is highly depending on the situations, at this time period, the wheat’s price has dropped to lowest price ever, and the income of the farmers had drop half already, also, due to the drought, the farmers in Saskatchewan can’t even grow more foods. All those issues are the real things I witnessed, hope you can hook some thing up with everything occurred, occurring out there.
Hope you have a great day.
Sincerely,
An unknown traveler

Respond letter:

My dear wife,

Thankfully I can ready your letter here, my love. The war was going hard here, I eventually find times to write this letter back to you, sorry if my writing is scribbled, the conditions was not so well there. Anyway, hope you are doing good back home, I can understand when all the man like me go to the war, fight for the honor of our country, the female left at home must took all the work of us. I always believe that female can doing as well as man, that with no double at all. With the sufficient moneys, our home country provided, we got pretty much everything I needed, even the gas masks that we just got because of the chlorine gases that German just used in the battle of Ypres, but don’t worry about me, I am doing alright there, I got the gas masks before the chlorine gas spread to my trench, but many of my friends left injured. Though… hopefully, the condition in the trench could improve by time, the water inside the trench just bother me so much, I got to stay there all the time all day during the battles. Let’s work together to get over this war. Long live the queen!

Your love,

Soliders

The chain of friendship cartoon questions.

1. A: Serbia B: Austria C: Russia D: Germany E: France F: Italy
2. This cartoon talked about the alliance between countries in Europe, the different color indicates the different alliance group.
3. Serbia was showed as a child, indicate that Serbia is only have a little influence to others, but when Serbia got involved, a chain reaction start happening
4. The Germany had an instant reaction on what was happening on Serbia, while the France and England were hesitate a while because they were not even sure each other of them are alliance or not.
5. England were hesitating a lot of making decision at that moment, Germany and England was tied up and compete in a lot of ways, so their relationship was ambiguous.
6. So, after the Serbia got attacked, the Austria had an instant reaction of willing to interpret into the fight, when Austria want to do more about the invasion, the Russian get into the intervene, as the Germany were ready for that, they invaded Russia instantly. France and UK want to sit back and relax, but they realize that the Austria – Germany would take over and break the balance, so they starting attacking Germany.
7. a) That could be Italy, it was the only country could interpret with the fight but did not participate in.
b) Because Serbia was a pretty small country with only a few influences, but could lead a different result of the whole things.
c) I think it’s sarcastic, it used the word “friendship” to represent the how bad the relation it was between all the countries.
