The act of racism in a society has been present throughout our history. It has changed from the older days until the present.
Racism then was more focused on work labor and jobs. Back then, a majority of jobs belonged to white men, with the African-American population not having a job to go. Racism rose after the rise of black slavery, they could be bought, traded and mistreated simply if their ‘owners’ wished. Black people were regarded as not being human, and thus, did not have basic human rights. If a black person was working, they were allowed to be fired merely due to the colour of their skin. White men held most of the power, and made decisions for those who did not share the same skin colour as them. This was an act of clear, apparent racism, and was tolerated back then, but isn’t now. Anyone who was a person of colour, who tried to speak up against racism, was treated poorly and killed by someone of white skin tone.
Back then, defenceless and innocent black children were being bombarded by police officers on public transit like buses, or even when they were walking through the city. Black people were supposed to give their seat up to white people, and were in trouble if they didn’t.
Now, people with any skin colour are allowed to be hired for any job, and are given equal opportunity to work. Now, people cannot be fired for their skin tone, as discrimination is not allowed in almost all work places. As a comparison from previous years, anyone with any skin tone is allowed to run for power, and can make decisions regarding their race and people. Slavery is not legal in a numerous amount of places, and almost everyone in the world has some sort of basic human rights. In fact, in Canada, human rights are protected by 3 kinds of laws. There are plenty of people of colour now, who are standing up for further equal rights, and. since we have freedom of speech, are allowed to speak their minds in a way that is true to them.
Compared to back then, black people no longer have to give up their seat on the bus. Defenceless children are no longer allowed to be bombarded by people in the public, and if someone is being racist, so many people speak up to correct and explain why it is now politically incorrect to do so.
Racism has changed from then VS now, and has had a drastic impact upon society and its members. Hopefully, racism will soon be eradicated, but it for sure has had an influential impact. Poverty has also had a large part in racism, but there is always something to improve and work on for the future generations.
