This week we focused mainly on starting the polynomial unit. We first learned how to combine the like terms in an equation, as well as using algebra tiles to help simplify equations and such.

How to combine Like Terms:

1. First, write out the equation, and take a look. We’re going to combine them regularly. You can do this by circling or drawing a shape around the same terms.
2. Next, write the terms out after adding or subtracting them all together. This should equal your answer.

How to use Algebra Tiles to demonstrate an equation
1. Write out the equation as you normally would. For algebra tiles, you would preferably use a smaller number for the equation. Once you have it written out, continue to the next step.

2. Draw out algebra tiles. The large squares are equal to x to the 2nd power, and the little rectangles are x. The small cubes are equal to 1. The shaded-in tiles are positive, and the white tiles are negative. Since the second half of the equation is (-), you have to change the function of the rest of that half.

3. Cancel out all the negative and positive tiles that you can by making zero pairs.

Step 4.

4. Once this is done, you will have the answer. You can rewrite out the algebra tiles underneath it of the simplified version if you want to like I did here.

5. You’re finished! Here is the answer with updated algebra tiles.
