For this Community Connections project, I interviewed my mother because she used to be a Certified Dental Assistant, which meant that for major dental surgeries and appointments, she helped pass the tools to the Dentists and looked at the X-rays. She worked Smiles Unlimited, but that closed down and she went to Rocky Point Dental in Port Moody. She inspires me because she shows that with dedication and time, you can choose the job that really speaks to you.
Question 1: Why are you so passionate about your job?
“I like doing it and I’ve spent my life getting the correct education for this certain job, I still keep my license valid in case I want to go back to work. I enjoy assisting others in helping keep other people’s teeth healthy, ”
Question 2: What obstacles have you faced to get to where you are today?
“Well, the finances for post secondary definitely posed a small problem, and when you’re in a class with hundreds of other people, there’s a certain hint of competition to be picked for a job. ”
Question 3: Would you be open to further contact from Riverside Secondary Students?
“Sure, you can contact me at taramarkel@telus.net, however I am not currently working as a Certified Dental Assistant. ”
Question 4: How long was your education, and how have you been keeping your CDA license?
“My education was quite long, in order to get my bachelor of science, I had to study for 3 years, and I had 1 year of dental assisting practice. I still go to dental conferences and meetings still. The meetings are once a month and the conferences last for a couple days per year. ”
Question 5: If you had the choice to pick a different career option, what would you pick?
“Well, I’ve always loved animals, seeing as we have 2 puppies right now, I think being a Vet Assistant would be quite a rewarding job. I also do like photography so possibly a photographer, or perhaps baking. ”
