What I have learned about Grade 9 Polynomials

Vocabulary-

-Term-Single number separated by + or –

-Coefficient- The number before a variable, ie- 6a

-Constant-A number by itself, always does its function regardless of other numbers, whole number, 4a+1

-Degree-Highest variable in a polynomial

-Monomial- An algebraic expression with 1 term-5a+6

-Binomial-An algebraic expression with 2 terms-4x+3y

-Trinomial-An algebraic expression with 3 terms-3y+3x+3z

How to add-Group the like terms and remove all 0 pairs

How to subtract-The numbers in brackets are the opposite integer, group the like terms and subtract

How to multiply-Multiply coefficients, add variables

How to divide-Divide coefficients, subtract variables

 

Math 9- Equivelent Expressions

Equivelent Expressions can be modeled out in many ways, including algebra tiles. Algebra tiles are a hands on way to sort and simplify algebraic expressions. One way to show

2x^{2} + 3x – 2 – 2x ^{2} + 1x – 7x is to use the algebra tiles as shown below. The large squares each represent an x ^{2} , while the rectangles indicate ‘x’ and the smaller cubes show a whole number, like 2 or -7. A disadvantage of using algebra tiles is that it takes a lot of time to model out the question, get zero pairs, and see what is left for the answer. If the question involves large numbers, it is wise to not use the algebra tiles. There are 2 sides to algebra tiles, the front side has the text on it, and is colored, meaning that the tile is positive. If the tile is facedown, no color, and no text seen, that means that it is negative.

First, you lay out all the parts of the expression in tile form.

Next, you have to simplify, and put all the like terms together in order for greatest to least value, from left to right.

And last, you find the zero pairs, and take those out, and what is left is your answer. In this case, my answer would be -4x + -1

The next expression is -1x ^{2} + 4x +3 – 3x ^{2} – 3 + 2x = -4x ^{2} + 6x

 

What I learned about Grade 9 Exponents

What is an exponent?  An exponent includes a base, ( the number being multiplied by itself), and the exponent, or power, which is the amount of times the base is being multiplied. The exponent tells you how many copies of the base you need to make. 5 ^{6} so this is 5 and 6 copies of 5

Exponents are very lazy, and they don’t do as you want them to, so you have to remember to put brackets around them so they are reminded to multiply.

How do you evaluate an expression with exponents?  In order to evaluate expressions, you can use either  of methods, or rules. The division rule, the multiplication rule, power of a power, and the 0 law.

  • The multiplication law is quite simple, if the base is the same, you merely add the exponents together, and the combined result of the exponents is placed over the base. If the bases are not the same, this rule does not apply for the equation.
  • The division law is about the same thing. If the base is the same, you subtract the exponents from one another, left to right, and the leftover is placed back on top with the base.
  • Power of a power is when the base has an exponent with another exponent around the first exponent in brackets.  The exponents must always be multiplied.
  • 0 law is when the exponent has 0 copies, the answer is always 1. x^{0}

5^{5} is 5 to the 5th power. People assume that the answer is 25 because 5x 5 is 25, but 5 to the 5th is 5, with 5 copies.

What I have learned in Math 9

In the first couple weeks of Grade 9 math, we have learned about how to place fractions and improper fractions on the number lines, using both negative integers and positive  integers. To do so first, you have to find a common denominator and then make sure that the number line is split into sections of said number. To place a mixed number on the number line, you can either change it into an improper fraction, or keep it as it is, but not if the denominator is different than what the sections of the number line is divided into.

Comparing fractions is slightly easier, as you only need to find a common denominator, and the multiply accordingly to get the same denominator. However, what you do to the bottom, you must do to the top number, so you have to multiply it by the same number as you did with the bottom. The larger number is always the larger one, but if it is a negative number for both fractions, the number closest to 0 is the largest.

Adding and subtracting is quite the same deal. You have to find a common denominator, and whatever you multiplied by to find it, you have to repeat that to the top number. For multiplying, you can just do the question as it is, but you must remember to reduce the answer further if you can. Dividing isn’t quite the same deal. For dividing, you must change the question into a multiplication question, but instead you must invert the fraction to the right of the multiplication sign.

One thing I have learned is that if you have a positive number over a negative number in a fraction, you can move the negative sign to the top number. That makes it a lot easier, and a good saying is “to work smarter, not harder,”

Digital Footprint

Your digital footprint can affect your future opportunities in many different ways.  Jobs may reject hiring you, or fire you from the job if you have an unclean digital footprint. Your digital footprint in the past may unintendedly cause other people to have an inaccurate opinion and judgement of you.

There are many ways to keep your digital footprint clean, appropriate and safe. One way is to think before you post anything, and to ask yourself if it will offend anyone or harm anyone, if the answer is yes, then perhaps not posting it would be a better idea, and a good way to keep your footprint clean.  Another way is to think carefully about what you say, because if you post something, it stays on the internet forever, regardless if you delete it or not. If you are thinking about posting a negative comment, it is better to remember the saying, ‘if you don’t have anything to nice to say, then don’t say it at all,’

I learned that Apple tracks how many times you go to a certain place, say, your house, via location services. You have to remember that Apple can see where you are, and remain knowledgeable of the fact. Another bit of information is that once you post something on the internet, it can never be taken off, like sure, you could delete a post, but the website, company or  app stores all the deleted things, and people can screenshot it for any later use of blackmail or such. The most effective way in sharing this information is a hands on experience, and one good way is to think about what companies like Apple and Samsung  do with personal information like your name, age and address. The best to learn about this is to watch an informational video.
