“Nothing in the world is permanent, and we’re foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we’re still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it.”

-W. Somerset Maugham

I find this quote is very interesting because it refers to everyone at some point in their life. Everything comes and goes with time. Although, people often tend to want more time, instead of enjoying what they have. At the end of the day, we will regret not being thankful for what we had. We will look back and wish that we enjoyed and embraced all the good in our life because we will miss it once it’s gone.

We always want more. There is never enough time to enjoy with friends or spend making significant memories. Yet, we always tend to waste our time wishing away for more instead of savoring the little time that is left. When I think of this, the thing that strikes me most as a teenager is simply how little time there is left with this kind of life. It horrifies me to think that in just a couple of years I will be out on my own in the world free from my foolish problems. Sure, school is stressful. Although, school has also been amazing. I have made so many friends, made countless memories. I have had a similar life since I was five. Every year a new grade, although it stays simple. Someday I will miss camping trips with all my friends. There will come a time when I will crave to have another sleepover where we watched movies under a warm blanket for hours. I will wish that my biggest problems are my homework assignments. Someday all of it will be gone and I will look back and wish I had realized how fantastic my life was. I will be confused as to why I was worried about being judged or trying every opportunity possible. I will ask myself why I didn’t just take more risks. I will wonder why I didn’t embrace every small part of every possibility to grow and learn.

My life is an open road. It’s my choice if I embrace the speed bumps, have fun with them. It’s my choice if I take the new long yellow road and take a risk. Although it’s my choice if I go to the old supermarket instead to be safe. If I take the yellow road, possibilities can line up for me and I could discover a beautiful waterfall that leads to an amazing discovery. I can also find a dead end, but that’s what happens when you take a risk. If I don’t take the yellow road, the next time I go on the road I might want to go on the yellow road but it could be shut down. When I look back, I might think to myself, regretting my decision ~What if I had found a waterfall?

To be able to appreciate what you have, you have to savor the moments. Whenever you are enjoying yourself, instead of thinking about wanting more time, capture the feeling. Enjoy being in a happy place. You have to hold on to these moments because they are rare. You have to appreciate the opportunities you have and take advantage of the good in your life. Try to capture the memories of laughing with your friends. You can dwell on the past all you want, wishing you were there again. You can dream for the future all you want. Although, the most important thing is to live in the moment. There will come a time when you want to look back on what you have accomplished. Make sure to do things you know you will not regret. My time in school has been amazing and I will try to make an effort to get involved in the school. I will learn to adapt when things don’t go my way because even when a gray cloud is introduced into your life you have to cope with it. Maybe there is an opportunity in the grayest of clouds. You don’t learn if you don’t go through hard times and if you don’t make mistakes.

You have choices to make every day. Most people don’t realize how amazing their life is so think to yourself. Before you take what you have for granted ask yourself. ~Am I doing everything possible to savor the happiness and opportunities in my life?
