Digital Footprint

How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least two examples

Your digital footprint could affect you because when you interview for a job or want to get into a good college, they will look at your digital footprint and if you posted something inappropriate or if  there is something bad that comes up when they google your name, you could lose your spot for the place you’re applying for. If you are tagged in something that is inappropriate it could also affect you. Say your friend posted about a party you went to as a teenager and you and your friends are vaping in the photo. Your college that you applied for will probably rather pick another kid that has a somewhat positive digital footprint but had all the same qualifications based on their application. that post could be the thing separating you from your dream college. It could also affect you if you are applying to immigrate to another country. They could see you have a criminal background or were involved with gang activity and decide that they do not want to risk bringing you into their country.

Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

Make sure your posts are appropriate before posting because once it is on the internet, it will never completely be deleted. You can keep your social media profiles private and have an appropriate bio and profile picture. Remove any tags from posts you don’t want to be associated with or ask the people who posted it to remove it.  Do not give out your personal information everywhere. For example, make sure to only fill out what is necessary on digital forms and read through privacy terms and conditions when installing an app or buying something on the internet. Make sure there are no negative videos of you or footage/photos of you on the internet. Make sure you google your name from time to time to make sure nothing personal comes up.

What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How would you go about telling them?

Be careful on what you post, and people associate you with and see you as on the internet. Do not post something you will regret later. Put all your accounts on social media to private. Don’t give out your personal information such as phone numbers, birthdays, credit card numbers, location, etc. Make sure you do not have any personal information on the internet for everyone to see. Remove tags from things you do not want to be associated with or ask the person who posted it to  remove your tag. I would tell them this by explaining and giving examples of other people similar to them to show how much access people can have to your digital footprint, and how much they can find out about you if you have a big digital footprint. I think using other people as an example would be effective because it shows how common and easy it is to access other’s digital footprints.
