A seat at the table

  1. What are two examples of food insecurity identified in this movie? What were some of the ways in which the individuals involved coped with their predicament? Were they successful? Why or why not?\

There were two families who were shown a lot during this documentary, they both had severe food insecurities. One family, the mother couldn’t hold a steady job that was going to supply her and her family with enough food to even just get through the week. She felt depresses and ashamed and humiliated. Once she managed to get a full-time job it was good for the mean time until she ran out of money within the first two months because she was not able to save she was that in need of food. The other mainly identified family was really struggling to stay on their feet because of all the children they had and the unstable jobs, like most situations. They therefore, could not take care of their homes and where left hungry more than often. Most of the time these families coped by just getting what they could and throwing it on the table because just enough food was better than none. The biggest wau people have coped is through food stamps. This organization goes off you salary and if you meet the requirements and are under a certain amount of money you would get like 15$ a month for free for example. Most of the time food stamps are very suceesful although, they are sometimes just not enough to porvied what these families needed. In Barbie’s case she did find and job which wasa good but then didn’t qualify for food stamps anymore so that put her in trouble a bit because she wasn’t able to save and get back on her feet.

  1. What specific demographics in our country might be more at risk of experiencing food insecurity? Why are they more at risk? Is there anything historical that might have caused this increased risk?

Depending on where you live it may be very hard to get certain foods. For example some places in the states are not able to get fresh healthier foods due to where they are. Mostly because they are small towns and deliverers do not have the time or money to go out of the way. Therefore, these towns are forced to only have the easy cheap access processed foods. Peoples family history yes, does takea great tll on these families today. If a family struggled with money they may have not left much of a path or inheritance for their kids to go off of and it doesn’t set a good example for their future lives.

  1. What is your personal reaction to this movie? Did you have any preexisting ideas about food insecurity? Were you surprised by some of the information that was presented? Why or why not?

My personal reaction to this move really hit me and made me feel a lot of different emotions. Sometimes when you watch a film about people who are less fortunate and there isn’t mnay examples of what people are actually  going through it doesn’t get to you and help you understand how less fortunate people actually live. This film had multiple familes and individuals who where struggling and their stories really moved me and made me feel ashamed for all the food I waste but don’t realize it. I was surprised with some of the info shared because I didn’t know exactly all the problems that some people go through and the amount of meals they actually skip because there reallyjust isn’t enough to get them through the week

  1. If you were in a position to directly or indirectly influence the issue at hand (such as a politician or policy maker) what would you do to help? What policies do you think could aid those that are hungry? ORWhat is a way that you could make a difference today? How would you go about making that difference ad change?

If I was in a position of helping I would 100% help after watching that film. I would be interested in doing what the lady interviewed was doing where she constantly was helping out this family get through the week and the littlest because that’s what these people need. I think if was to make a difference, knowing the littlesist thing can make the biggest change in even just one persons life I would start a organization that people take familes food that they are assigned to.
