1) What are two examples of food insecurity identified in this movie? What were some of the ways in which the individuals involved coped with their predicament? Were they successful? Why or why not?

Two examples of food insecurity could be: the embarrassing situation when you can’t rely on your salary and the only solution you have is accepting food bags from other people, that sometimes understand the situation and just leave the bags without talking to the people who will receive that foods; another example is the fact that some people can’t receive the right support they need because they are over 2$ of the maximum profit so they just need to go on with what they earn or quit the job to obtain those food-supports.

2)What specific demographics in our country might be more at risk of experiencing food insecurity? Why are they more at risk? Is there anything historical that might have caused this increased risk?

In Canada 1 in 8 Household is experiencing food insecurity, and if we sum them up, the amount is 4 million peopled 1,5 million of them are children. Nunavut and the Northwest Territories have the highest number of household food insecurity. The main problem is that the food is too expensive and they have low wages and salaries so they can’t afford it another problem is that some people live in foods desert, that means that the closet grocery is actually 45 miles away sometimes and people don’t have enough money and time to go there.

3)What is your personal reaction to this movie? Did you have any preexisting ideas about food insecurity? Were you surprised by some of the information that was presented? Why or why not?

I was not surprised about what I saw in the movie because I already knew about this situation. For the last to summers I went to Santo Domingo to help people that don’t have a house and can’t afford to buy food, and I helped them by buying food or primary supplies with money we had raised before. I know that I didn’t do enough and that this was just the right step towards the right direction, but in my opinion if everyone tries to find a way to stop or at least reduce this problem, maybe something can get better. The only thing in this movie that shocked me a little bit was that I didn’t know that so many people in the USA are suffering for food insecurity. I wasn’t expecting this country to be in this situation because they’re the richest country in the world so I thought they were suffering a little for this problem too, but I didn’t imagine that much.

4)If you were in a position to directly or indirectly influence the issue at hand (such as a politician or policy maker) what would you do to help? What policies do you think could aid those that are hungry? ORWhat is a way that you could make a difference today? How would you go about making that difference and change?

If I were in a position to directly or indirectly influence the issue at hand, I would probably make people buy healthy food for people that can’t afford it and also make the price of foods lower so that more people can buy what they need. I would mainly decrease vegetables and fruits price because those are the foods that can’t miss in every family house, in fact sometimes, since “junk” food is cheaper, people tend to buy it.

  1. Great work, Sofia! Your responses are excellent. I think that there is room in your response to question 4 for further development, but otherwise your work is outstanding.
