Single Story Challenge

The social dilemma shows us how social media divides our society because of our interests. Even though social media has helped a lot of problems, spreading awareness, etc. it has made us more polarized than ever, and has made the opposite side of a story seem like a dehumanized enemy and has made us not care about the other person’s opinion. An example would be how Adiche talks about her roommate creating a single story about how there is only catastrophe in Africa. “in this single story, there is no possibility of feelings more complex than pity, no possibility of a connection as human equals.”

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the famous public performer who did a speech on ” the danger of a single story”

The man who convinced over 200 KKK members to quit the Klan has shown us how much of an impact it has when you listen to people’s experiences. It shows how empathy, and understanding their situation can bring us together regardless of race, ideology, political stance, etc. “when we reject the single-story, then we realize there is never a single story about any place, we regain a paradise.”

Meet Daryl Davis, the man who convinced 200 KKK members to quit the klan.

Another video talks about Daryl Davis, the man who convinced the members to quit, talking about his personal experience with the KKK leader, Daryl talks about how “respect is key, sitting down and talking, not necessarily agreeing… talk to your adversaries, you’ll learn something, they will learn something.” So, I did what Daryl advised us to do, I was assigned to talk to Hannah, something that surprised me about Hannah was that she and I had quite a lot of things in common like we both like fashion, art, and we are both introverted (I am sometimes outgoing) and we also had some agreements and disagreements on some topics, But I was surprised when she said that she finds calculus easy, I was surprised by this because I despise math and find it very difficult. We also don’t like it when people bother/ interrupt us when we are doing something. In conclusion, it is best to not always be at war with your opponent, instead sit down and talk to them, and ask yourself and them “why?”

1) something that surprised me was that my partner lived in Hong Kong until she was ten.
2) something that makes my partner different is that she puts money before her passions.
3) we both like art, photography, and fashion!
4)something that evolved the single story about my partner was that not only is she introverted, she also dislikes when people bother her

Art stamp

Image preview

the process of making the stamp was pretty fun I’m not going to lie, I like how it was satisfying how scraping the linel (I think that’s how you say it) felt. also, the process was time-consuming and I messed up in some parts, but I worked around it and made it work. but this did make my proportions seem a little off, line the N, it looks shorter on one side. That was because I accidentally scraped too far and lost a bit of control over what I was trying to scrape. The good news is that I did not get hurt because I used a board that would keep my hands safe if I used it properly

altered art books-Shyaan

the altered book that I talked about was based on self-growth and understanding that within the darkness, there is always light and to trust the process through tough times. I feel like this is an important topic to talk about because many people try to solve other people’s problems out of kindness, but never pay attention or “have the time” to enjoy time with themselves. Also, I feel like this is important to talk about because not many people talk about finding themselves and loving themselves before they love others.

The process of finding photos was pretty easy, but finding words to complete the sentence that made sense was a tough challenge because there were lots of cool keywords like ‘unruly beast’ or ‘darkness’ but it was tougher to find words to tie the keywords together to make sense. The three artbook techniques I used are flaps, hidden content, and cut-outs. and the three art-making techniques I used were paper silhouettes, paper cutouts, and black-out poetry. the three art development strategies I used are minification, multiplication, and distortion.

School districts need to teach students more about historical racism

By: Shyaan Manki

Fifty-eight percent of Canadian youth report seeing others at school insulted, bullied or excluded based on their race or ethnicity, says new data from UBC and the Angus Reid Institute.

Many children of colour have encountered some type of racism throughout their time in school, some from teachers, some from their peers. So, what can our peers do to prevent this from happening? And how can you make school a safer space for everyone?

An important part of many students’ lives is their physical health and playing sports and to feel safe and have fun, but a report made by in CBC sports in 2020, examining key positions in sports teams in 56 universities in Canada shows that  “of the nearly 400 positions examined, only about 10 percent were held by Black, Indigenous or persons of colour (BIPOC). Only one of the 56 schools has a non-white athletic director.”

The numbers of how many people of colour are being rejected from sports teams in their own schools are frightening and show how school athletics teams need to be more inclusive and more accepting of diversity in their teams.

CBC sports also suggested ways schools can improve on being more inclusive, such as “publicly celebrating the achievements of racialized athletes so potential recruits know they wouldn’t be alone on a team;” as well as, “mandatory and continuous anti-racism training, and a shift in how athletes and coaches are recruited.”

Another area where schools can improve to prevent racism is how much school districts are teaching about historical racism. A Study made by  UBC and the Angus Reid Institute examines how much historical discrimination is being taught to children, stated that: “One-third  [of students] said they never learned anything about slavery in Canada; half said they didn’t learn of the internment of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War; 60% said schools didn’t teach them about the Chinese immigrant head tax, and 80% said the topic of the SS Komagata Maru which carried refugees from India and was turned away in Vancouver never came up in their classrooms.”

This study shows how much of an influence school districts, teachers, and coaches have on the younger generations, and how much of a positive or negative impact they have on our awareness and mitigation of racism and the way we think towards others. Fortunately, we can take that to our advantage if society teaches children that every person is equal and that no person, regardless of colour, or wealth status, etc. is above another. The study also shows how if seniors and adults of communities expose racism at an early age it will help prevent racism in schools.

It is important to teach young teens and children to be careful in what they say, as they will soon be the future of society. We can also make our schools a safer environment if school councils take initiative to prevent racism in our schools. Parents and guardians also need to realize that they also hold a profound amount of power to teach their children about how to talk to others with kindness and as equals and to prevent their children from speaking racist comments in the school.

surreal collage

for this collage i have used juxtaposition, and metamorphosis. I have used juxtaposition by making the background black and white, and the main piece, the people standing, very bright and as the ‘standing out’ piece. I have used metamorphosis by making the people look like they are talking/singing into the microphone.

one-pager assignment

Blue and Green Illustrated Environmental Protection Poster by shyaan manki

The project I worked on is a one-pager poster about empathy and how to feel empathetic, and how many people have been becoming less empathetic throughout the years. This project has really made me more socially aware of how divided and unbiased our community has become and how our community and us as individuals can be empathetic and more socially connective without using our phones.
