Single Story Challenge

The social dilemma shows us how social media divides our society because of our interests. Even though social media has helped a lot of problems, spreading awareness, etc. it has made us more polarized than ever, and has made the opposite side of a story seem like a dehumanized enemy and has made us not care about the other person’s opinion. An example would be how Adiche talks about her roommate creating a single story about how there is only catastrophe in Africa. “in this single story, there is no possibility of feelings more complex than pity, no possibility of a connection as human equals.”

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the famous public performer who did a speech on ” the danger of a single story”

The man who convinced over 200 KKK members to quit the Klan has shown us how much of an impact it has when you listen to people’s experiences. It shows how empathy, and understanding their situation can bring us together regardless of race, ideology, political stance, etc. “when we reject the single-story, then we realize there is never a single story about any place, we regain a paradise.”

Meet Daryl Davis, the man who convinced 200 KKK members to quit the klan.

Another video talks about Daryl Davis, the man who convinced the members to quit, talking about his personal experience with the KKK leader, Daryl talks about how “respect is key, sitting down and talking, not necessarily agreeing… talk to your adversaries, you’ll learn something, they will learn something.” So, I did what Daryl advised us to do, I was assigned to talk to Hannah, something that surprised me about Hannah was that she and I had quite a lot of things in common like we both like fashion, art, and we are both introverted (I am sometimes outgoing) and we also had some agreements and disagreements on some topics, But I was surprised when she said that she finds calculus easy, I was surprised by this because I despise math and find it very difficult. We also don’t like it when people bother/ interrupt us when we are doing something. In conclusion, it is best to not always be at war with your opponent, instead sit down and talk to them, and ask yourself and them “why?”

1) something that surprised me was that my partner lived in Hong Kong until she was ten.
2) something that makes my partner different is that she puts money before her passions.
3) we both like art, photography, and fashion!
4)something that evolved the single story about my partner was that not only is she introverted, she also dislikes when people bother her
