Mutation Story – Huntington’s Disease

Huntington Disease

Part 1

Hi, my real name is Huntingtin gene, but I go by the nickname HTT gene. I live with my fellow genes in my lovely host’s body, Katy. She is a 30 year old mother, living with her baby boy, Jackson, who is nine months old and her husband Carl. For many years I’ve been living in her body, watching her create a new family with her new born.

First, let me introduce myself. I provide instructions for making a protein called Huntingtin. This protein plays an important role in the neurons in the brain which is essential for the normal development before birth. Huntingtin is found in many of the body tissues but mostly in the brain. Its job is sending chemical signals from the brain to the body, transporting materials and protecting the cells from self-destruction.

I contain a DNA segment which is known as CAG trinucleotide repeat. In other words, I am made up of a series of three DNA building blocks, cytosine, adenine and guanine that appears multiple times in a row.

Huntington disease

One day, I was having a conversation with my friend Eddy, another gene, who wanted to know what happens during genetic mutation.

“Well first of all there’s two types of mutations, the first one is gene mutation which changes a single gene and the other is chromosomal mutations that changes in whole chromosomes. During genetic mutation, the DNA sequence changes permanently. It could also differ in size. DNA can undergo mutations in the sequence of bases, A, C, G, and T and during DNA replication if errors are made or not corrected in time. It can also happen from exposure to environmental factors such as smoking, sunlight and radiation. There’s also insertion and deletion. Insertion is when one base is inserted from the DNA sequence and deletion is when one base is removed from the DNA sequence.” I responded.

“Wow, that’s very interesting, I’ll tell everyone what I learned today!”

As Eddy left to chatter with other friends nearby, I started working on my daily tasks of making the protein Huntingtin. Hours later, I feel myself expanding. What’s happening to me? I then realize it’s my CAG segment repeating. My CAG segment normally repeats 10 to 35 times but as I continue to elongate, I split into smaller toxic fragments then attach to the neurons. Why is this happening? I wasn’t supposed to brake into pieces. But then I realized, my CAG segment repeated 36 to more than 120 times. I repeated more than I should have.

   Diagram of Huntington disease

As I attach to the neurons, it starts disrupting the cells. This then affects the regions of the brain that help coordinate movement, control thinking and emotions. I suddenly hear Katy’s cry of pain. As she tries to walk to the kitchen, she stumbles and falls to the ground. She then gets up and places her work on her desk, but her hands are twitching and shaking constantly and she can’t seem to focus on her work. She gives up and walks towards the fridge to fetch a glass of water. As soon as she grabs her drink, she drops the glass and begins to cry. She’s crying non-stop and I know the reason why. I have mutated to cause the Huntington disease. Unfortunately my gene mutation is hereditary. I suddenly hear Carl running down the stairs holding her close and placing her head on his shoulder as tears run down her cheek.

As time goes by, I’ve been watching the dreadful and painful life of Katy. She’s been having trouble swallowing and needing help to walk. She must take medication to reduce her emotions. She doesn’t seem to speak to others due to the pain in her throat. I can tell she’s trying to be strong, for her husband and for her baby. Eventually this disease will sadly lead to the death of Katy and I am the reason why.

Part 2

1)Questions:

  1. What is Huntington disease?

Huntington disease is a neurodegenerative disorder and causes brain cells to malfunction and die. When one single gene called the HTT gene produces huntingtin, the CAG in the HTT gene repeats more than 36 to 120 times and splits into chemical fragments affecting the cells of the brain. This then affects the movements of the body, loss control of emotions and ability to concentrate and remember certain things.

  1. What are the symptoms of Huntington disease?

The symptoms of this disease includes troubles with movement control such as walking, trouble speaking, swallowing, uncontrollable emotions such as depression, anger, frustration, memory loss, can’t concentrate, twitching, consistent movements and anxiety.

  1. Is there a cure for this disease?

There is no cure for this disease although for the symptoms, doctors give medication to reduce the pain. Scientists have tried to find a way to cure the disease but only found a way to help with the function of the movement with the body. This disease is deadly as it affects your brain which causes many problems.

  1. What did the mutation do to the host?

When the elongated gene splits into chemical fragments that attaches to the neurons affecting the cells that affects the regions of the brain which helps coordinate movement as well as control of thinking and emotions. The host then gets different symptoms as the brain is very important for the body.

  1. What is function of the gene?

The function of HTT gene is to provide instructions for making a protein called Huntingtin. This protein sends chemical signals from the brain to the body, transports materials and protects cells from self-destruction.

  1. At what age do you get Huntington disease?

The average is 35 to 50 years old but 6% of juvenile HD which affects children and teenagers. Most people die after 20 years. This disease is passed on to generations, one copy of each parent. A parent with a defective Huntington gene could pass along the defective copy of the gene or the healthy copy. Each child in the family has a 50 percent chance of inheriting the gene that causes the genetic disorder. There are early stages, intermediate stages and advanced stages but people normally have intermediate stages.

2) What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project?

Some digital tools I used while writing the story is Youtube. I watched youtube videos of understanding how Huntington disease is caused. This helped me better understand what was happening because I’m more visual. I also found other websites that had a variety of topics of Huntington disease. Instead of using websites that are commonly used such as Wikipedia and Google, I found some websites that explained information into shorter simpler paragraphs with images that helped with comprehension. I also used some blogs of other’s to understand the experience of someone living with the disease. Having him update on how he/she is doing throughout the days are truly inspiring and I learned more information about this disease.

Blog-Surviving Huntington disease

3) What was the process you used to investigate the topic?

The process I used while I researching for the topic is to not research questions. I found that when you shorten the question you’re asking and type in the key words rather than typing a full question, it shows more results. I had a variety of websites when I just typed in what I was looking for and avoided asking specific questions. I even found more information not even linked to my question which lead me in to developing my information.

4) How did you verify and cite the information you found?

I verified the websites I used by going on many different websites. When I go through different websites, I make sure that the information is not different and that they all say the same thing. I also made sure to avoid using websites that are constantly changed such as Wikipedia. Wikipedia normally has people change the info and sometimes it can be wrong, but I do use it if needed and just research through other websites to see if they say the same thing.

5) How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you have done better?

The process was a little difficult as the disease I chose didn’t have much info on the gene during the mutation. I had a hard time developing the story and incorporating facts about the mutation without just throwing it in. What I could’ve done better is I would have chosen another disease that I know someone has so I can interview them and understand more about this disease. It could also help me understand how it feels to live with the disease and experience with that person as I write the story.

 Surface Area and Volume

IMG_0636[1]IMG_0637[1]IMG_0643[1]21839 (1)

Surface Area and Volume:

The difference between surface area and volume is that surface area is the sum of areas of all the faces of a shape/solid figure and is measured in square units and volume is the number of cubic units that make up a solid figure. Surface area measures around the solid object and volume measures how much is inside the object.

Electricity Generation and Transmission

Hydroelectric generators

Hydroelectric generators harness water’s energy and converts the energy into electricity. The dam holds back the water creating a large reservoir. The gates on the dam opens and the water gets pulled in through the pen stock which is a pipeline that leads to the turbine. As it flows through the pipe, the water then builds up pressure. Water strikes the blades of a turbine and that’s what makes it turn. The turbine is attached to a generator so as the blades turn, the magnets inside the generator turn as well. The big magnets produce alternating current by having them pass copper coils which makes the electrons more. The transformer takes the alternating current and transforms it into high-voltage current. The used water that went through the entire cycle now goes through the pipelines and returns back to the river downstream. The stored energy, which is the water stored in the reservoir, has its gate open for the used water to go through the pen stock and then to become kinetic energy.

Hydro Electric Generation System

Hydro power plants

Pros:

Hydroelectric is renewable, you can use it as much as you want but you can’t use it up and continues to have a constant water cycle that goes around the earth. It may be expensive when you must pay for the power plants but it’s not very expensive to pay for workers to take care of them because it can be controlled by itself. It’s also very echo-friendly as it does not cause pollution or to not use gas that can destroy the environment such as the animals and plants. It’s a lot safer because it uses water and it’s reliable because there are very little fluctuations of electric power being used.

Cons:

Hydroelectric generators can still have negative effects in the environment such as killing the fish by changing the sea level. So there may be small risks of floods but not extreme. It is also very expensive to pay for the power plants and plus the employees to take care of them.

Hydroelectric Power

Hydroelectric Energy

Hydroelectric generator

Thermal generator

Thermal generators is a device that converts heat to electrical energy. They can be used in power plants to convert waste heat into electrical power. Thermal power plants usually use coal, and nuclear power plants. A steam rotates from high pressure as well as high temperature and the rotation is transferred to a generator which produces electricity. As it rotates, it loses energy which results in low pressure and low temperature steam in the turbine. To bring the low pressure back to its original state so that it can produce electrical continuously, a condenser is used to protect from heat surroundings which converts into steam. When exiting from the condenser fluid is in liquid state, so it’s gone back to its original pressure.

Thermal Power Plants

Pros:

Fuels are easy to find because it’s under the earth’s crust and can be transported easily from one place to another. It’s less expensive than hydroelectric generators. It produces lots of energy and there is many areas and locations for thermal generators.

Cons:

It’s non-renewable and causes pollution in the air because it uses gas which effects the outside environment and the animals that live out in the wild. It’s also not reliable because the fossil fuels are very expensive and hazardous sources of energy.

thermal power plant picture

Thermal Power

Transmission Process

Electricity is made at a power plant by giant generators and the step-up transformers increase the voltage before long distance transport. The electrical energy is then sent through high-voltage transmission lines that stretch across the country. It reaches a substation, where voltage is lowered so it can travel through smaller power lines. When it travels through distribution lines to your complex or neighbourhood, the step-down transformers reduce the voltage of the power lines. As it connects to your house through the service drop, it then passes through a meter. The electricity goes to the service panel in your basement or garage, where the breakers, fuses protect the wires that protects your house from being overloaded. It then travels through wires that are inside your walls, then to the outlets and finally to the switches that are all over your house.

My Opinion

In my opinion, hydroelectric generators are better than thermal generators. One of the reasons is because hydroelectric generators uses water so it’s a lot safer than thermal generators which causes pollution as it is very hazardous for the environment. It’s also renewable so you can use it up and it won’t run out and is reliable because there are very little fluctuations of electric power being used. With thermal generator, you cannot rely on them because they are too expensive and they are hazardous source of energy which can effect animals and the environment. With hydroelectric generators, it may be expensive for the plants but not for the maintenance because we don’t need to have lots of workers and they usually cost very little to pay for a couple of workers. Thermal generators on the other hand needs lots of oil and gas which is very expensive and may harm the outside environment. One of the most useful things about hydroelectric generators is that it’s very flexible, so adjusting the water flow is very easy and output of electricity is pretty simple, whereas thermal generators need excessive amounts of water for thermal power plants as well as a longer duration before it supplies generated power to the grid. In conclusion, I think hydroelectric power is echo friendly unlike thermal generator because it doesn’t release pollution and is a lot more reliable when needed.

Here is my summary of both Hydroelectric generation and Thermal generation.

Sandwich wrap (4)

Do we need Sandwich/Plastic wrap? (My opinion)

I don’t think we need plastic wrap because we can still use other materials to replace it and still work extremely well. If we didn’t have plastic wrap, we would be using other alternatives such as zip lock bags to store food in the freezer and aluminum foil to cover foods that go in the oven. Now a days, we have these reusable covers called silicone rubber which works just as well as plastic wrap, without throwing out every time you use it and without the hassle of trying to undo it when it gets stuck together. This silicone rubber is reusable, so you won’t have to keep buying plastic wrap boxes. Also, it saves you from accidentally putting it in the microwave and oven because it can be melted in the oven and release toxic in the microwave. In my opinion, I think we can still live without plastic wrap, even though it may keep your food fresh for a longer period of time, it isn’t eco-friendly. You are also saving the environment if you don’t use so many plastic. Best of all, your saving money, and it’s easier to take off the silicone rubber when you’re in a rush.

My life next door

I thought the book was an adorable cutesy love story which had a sudden twist near the end. I found the story interesting, having two people from different worlds coming together. The big situation they had to go through made me feel as if I cared for the characters, which made me want the best for both of them. I did enjoy the story although it wasn’t my favourite book I’ve read throughout the year.

Science App review

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a great app to use for science and here are my reasons why.

1. Is this app easy to understand and use?

This app is very easy to use as it is straight forward, and is divided into multiple sections by subjects so that you can find what you’re looking for. Once you open up the app, it shows all the different topics without the hassle of trying to scroll through. Each subject is divided into smaller sections, like in Science which is divided by category, like biology and Chemistry. You may also search about the content if you do not see it in view. The app doesn’t buffer and has no pop-ups so it’s not so frustrating to use when in school. You may also download videos into your view list for easier access.

Khan Academy

2. Does this app help with different types of learners?

This app can help with any type of learner such as a visual learner, those who learn by reading and those who learn by listening. It helps with visual learners because the app contains videos that explains things thoroughly. Some videos may include drawings which can help other users understand the information better. Under most of the videos, they have all the words written down so for those who like reading, they can read while listening to the video instead of watching. That also helps for those who learn by listening, by just listening to the person speak in the video. Since the transcript is written down under some videos, you won’t have to pause the video every time you’re trying to write something down. They also list down below the times when they talk about a certain fact, so the user can skip to that point in the video when they need to.

Khan Academy 1

3. What techniques does this app use to help students?

The videos that are included in the app are very well explained. The videos go straight to the point and list the most important facts of each topic. It’s easier to understand then reading from a textbook and you won’t have to rewrite or highlight the main points because the videos are short and only includes the key points. You may also refer back to the videos and go through the transcript that’s located underneath the video. Since you can save videos in your view list, you don’t need to use WiFi to watch those videos you downloaded, so it saves trouble of trying to load the video during class. The app also includes prep tests which is videos that explains the topic in a format that makes you prepared for future tests. Some of the videos has practice questions and you can download prep tests as well.

Khan Academy 2

4. Is there a variety of things you can search up?

There are many things you can search up. Science has many subtopics, and each one includes multiple videos, some include six videos, eleven or even fifty! Each of those videos is about seven to ten minutes long so they include a lot of information. All of the videos explain the information in a short and concise way. For science, it focuses on many topics such as biology and physics. Not only does it include school subjects such as math and science, but it also includes computing, college admissions and a section of discoveries and projects. You will mostly find what you’re looking for because the app develops each topic into a larger group of subtopics and breaks those down into multiple videos.

5. Can this app track your progress?

Khan academy can track your progress by creating a profile using your email, google account or Facebook account. This allows you to learn your subjects at your own pace and writes down your progress using a percentage. It determines your percentage by the number of videos you’re watching, and when you start a subject, like in science, they ask you to answer some questions to see where you’re at. You also earn badges every time you participate in a video. You can leave a question in the comments under the video or reply to a question, which gives you points as well. The badges show how well you’re progressing and is sort of a motivation for students. This allows you to communicate with others and to discuss about the topic. That way, if you don’t understand something at school, it’s another way for you to reach out and talk about the subject with others who do understand.

Khan Academy 3     Khan Academy 4

6. Is this app suitable for all ages?

This app can help kids, students, adults and even teachers. Khan Academy has a variety of different topics for all ages whether its science or math, everyone can learn from this app. When you create a profile, you can add coaches so that they can help you and have access to your progress. Your coach can support you and you can request to make certain videos about certain topics. This shows that since everyone, including all ages, can request a video, teachers can learn something from a video that a teacher requested and adults can learn from a video that another adult requested. Khan academy accepts any type of requests for videos that are based on the topic so they’re pretty flexible. If someone posted something that is unnecessarily, or irrelevant to the subject, you can flag that person, so it’s a friendly social app.

Review:

Khan Academy is a great app to use for school because you can communicate with others about the same subject, includes short and detailed videos, and has a variety of choices. This app allows you to explore different topics of science and other subjects as well and explains in a simple easy way. If you’re having a hard time understanding from a textbook, try watching the videos from the app and they’ll explain it in an understandable way. The science section of this app focuses on biology, physics, chemistry, organic chemistry, cosmology, astronomy, health and medicine. You can learn almost anything for free with this app and can quickly find what you’re looking for by searching through the search bar. Teachers, students and parents use this app all over the world and can help you at school, prepare you for future a job or for just human knowledge.

I think the app is very helpful for school and I would highly recommend this to others. There is many topics about science that you can explore and I learned a lot from this app. The way they explained the information is very unique and instead of trying to search up on google, I can just watch these videos and I’ll understand better. I am a visual learner, so these videos really help, especially when they include drawings when they speak. The prep tests and videos help me prepare for school. This app can definitely help in my Science 9 class because it explains things a lot easier and breaks it down so I’m not cramming everything into my head. I would give this app a 5 out of 5 stars because it includes a lot of videos and it’s easier for me understand with all the different pictures and the way they explain is a lot more simple. It’s great that there is so many choices that you can choose from that’s in the science section, so this can help many students because it doesn’t just focus on one part of a lesson in science.

Give Khan Academy a try and let me know what you think!

Good luck!
