In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, I learned that being different and having your own qualities is so much more important than being the same as everyone else. In this book, everyone lives in a society of sameness. A boy (Jonas) was chosen to be the “Receiver of Memory”. Being chosen as the receiver of memory, he is given the responsibility to store all the memories from the past. Since he has been living in this society of sameness emotions, color and memory are all new things to him. He has to cope with all the new information given to him and he see’s a whole new world he’d never imagine seeing. With the idea of sameness in this story, I learned that society should stop putting a standard where a certain ideal of a person is for the better. We are lucky enough to have our own qualities and are able to express our emotions. It has taught me that us as humans should be more grateful that we are living on this earth.
