Wasting Foods

I will admit i do waste a lot of food and my family does also, this does not mean i do it on purpose or my family does. We waste a lot of food because we have no one to give it to if someone asked for our leftover food we would happily give it to them but if no one does then it is hard for us to keep it because if we keep the leftovers then they do not look as appetizing as when they were fresh personally and for most people i find myself throwing out a lot of leftovers and throwing out a lot of good food, also i throw out a lot of food that has expired even though it is still most likely fine to eat still. Some things i can improve on is choosing what i eat i should plan out what i eat so i know that there are no leftovers to throw away or that they are leftovers that i will eat. Another improvement that i can make is making the right amount of food for the right amount of people, always make sure that there is the correct amount of servings. A way that lots of us could cut down on waste is to plan out who is eating what you are making or what your buying, and make that much food so that there is the right amount of food. Also if you do end up with leftovers make sure that you are taking it for lunch or that you are not throwing it away.

April Foods Reflection

I chose to reflect on this lab because it went well, and was one of my favorite labs. This was the chicken Parmesan lab. Personally i have never cooked chicken or steak before, so it was good to learn how important it is to cook the food all the way through. This is a good lab for beginners who like to have fancy meals and eat good food high in protein and such, but is not that hard to make either which is awesome. If i had to make one change to this dish it would be to make penne pasta instead of the spagetti but that is just because i like penne the best not because the spaghetti was bad, so i would not change much about this lab at all.

Eating disorders – Pica

Pica is a eating disorder that involves people eating things such as paint, dirt, rubber, insulation, or other items that have no nutritional value. People with certain mental health conditions such as schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder may develop pica as a coping mechanism. Some people may even enjoy and crave the textures or flavors of certain nonfood items. In some cultures, eating clay is an accepted behavior. People with Pica could eat harmless things such as grass, or ice but also could eat potentially harmless things such as dried up paint, or loose metal which could cause blockages in the intestinal tract which could lead to dehydration, vomiting, and shock. This condition usually occurs in young children or pregnant women and usually is just a temporary condition. Pica causes a lot of nutrient deficiency’s such as iron, zinc and some other different nutrients. In pregnant women you may have Pica and the unusual cravings that you have are deficiency’s of nutrients. Pregnant women can be especially prone to the disorder, which also affects people with learning difficulties such as autism. There is no single cause in Pica there is multiple, people may like the texture of the item, they may also have low nutrient levels, and finally people may start a diet and eventually get down to eating thing with either very little nutrients or no nutrients at all. People who Pica typically affect is very young children who do not know what they are doing and how bad it actually is for you, or also pregnant women because of the hormone change they may start to eat random things, which could seem harmless but could lead to some major long term affects. some signs of Pica are different deficiency’s and also development disorders, kids may not mature as fast or as normal then other people. Treating Pica is no simple task it is not like you can just make them stop eating you may have to lock up different materials, also if you go to a doctor they will first find out what you have been eating by different tests, and after they have they will tell you to either lock them up or remove the item if you can. The doctor may also test if you have an obsession or if it is just a craving to see what they need to do. if you have an obsession you may need to be but in a mental institute or a group home, but if it is just a craving then it still is no easy task but it may be a bit easier to treat. In conclusion Pica is a very serious disorder and if you or someone you know think that you have Pica or even a tiny craving for something it is recommended that you see a doctor.

March Foods Reflection

Today i will be reflecting on the cinnamon buns that we made in class. I chose to reflect on this lab because i feel like we could have made them better or done something to make them better or add a side to add more flavor. This lab i did enjoy, but not because of the food but more of the process and being with the group. I did not find the food the best because i found it needed some sort of glaze or topping to add some more taste. i did enjoy this lab it was fun and taught me some new stuff and it was pretty easy nothing that difficult so i think that it would be perfect for beginner students.  the product did turn out well its just a matter of adding different things, but i think the overall finish worked out well. if i was do do this lab again i believe that i would add some sort of glaze or topping to add flavor.

February Lab Reflection

February Reflection

The lab that I will be reflecting on is the cream puffs that we made. I chose to reflect on this lab because it was my favorite food that we made, and it turned out so well. This lab was my favorite because it was so easy to make and the cream puffs that my group made turned out fantastic. I enjoyed this lab because it was so easy to make. They also did not take much time to make, so it was quick and easy for our group. Our Cream puffs turned out great because our group talked to each other and made sure everyone knew what to do. We also used our time very efficiently which is such an important key because sometimes in different types of food (not all) timing is what makes the food better, in some food if you are a minute or two of then the food is ruined. This lab also brought our group together and the better your group knows each other and knows how everyone reacts to the things we do, it is just a lot better. My group worked with each other great, we were both ready to put the Cream Puffs in the oven at the same time, and if the other group needed help we would lend a hand. The process of making the cream puffs was very smooth, neither group messed up or made any crucial mistakes, mainly because we had such good communication and we knew what everyone was doing. If someone was doing something wrong we would help them fix what they were doing. If I were to do this lab again I think personally I would mix the matter with some Nutella, or put Nutella, or some chocolate inside the cream puff get that smooth texture that the whipping cream does not quite give. There is so many things that you can do with food and people may not realize it but trying new things is how most good food is made. I like to try my own, “throw some random spices in”, as my brother would say, there is just so much you can do and I want to try what I think would turn out great.

5 Flours

1: Cake Flour: All you need are two ingredients from the pantry — all-purpose flour and cornstarch. Here’s how to do it – Take one level cup of AP flour, remove two tablespoons, and then add two tablespoons of cornstarch back in. Be sure to sift the flour to distribute the cornstarch well before using it in your cake batter. cake flour is basically ap flour but you just need to add cornstarch to it to make it cake flour.

2: Wheat flour:  12% to 14% gluten content, wheat flour like its name is made from wheat.Wheat flour is a powder made from the grinding of wheat used for human consumption. Wheat varieties are called “soft” or “weak” if gluten content is low, and are called “hard” or “strong” if they have high gluten content. One of the primary reasons for the popularity of wheat flour is due to its gluten forming capacity when the flour is mixed with liquid. Gluten is the substance that provides dough with elasticity and the ability to stretch as the leavening agent produces carbon dioxide gas, which enables the dough to rise effectively.

3: Rye “(Secale cereale) is a grass grown extensively as a grain, a cover crop and a forage crop. It is a member of the wheat tribe (Triticeae) and is closely related tobarley (genus Hordeum) and wheat (Triticum). Rye grain is used for flour, ryebread, rye beer, crisp bread, some whiskeys, some vodkas, and animal fodder. ” in rye flour we do not see it as much it is more a European thing.

4: Spelt is a cereal grain in the wheat family, but it is not the same thing as wheat (same genus, different species). The grain has been cultivated for centuries, in both central Europe and the middle east. It looks very similar to wheat in appearance, but it has a much harder outer shell before it has been milled. It has a nutty and slightly sweet flavor, similar to that of whole wheat flour. Spelt flour is popular because it is very tasty and quite easy to work with. Spelt flour does contain gluten, which makes it very easy to substitute it into “regular” wheat cookie, bread, etc.

5: Barley flour is a flour prepared from dried and ground barleyBarley flour is used to prepare barley bread and other breads, such as flat bread and yeast breads. There are two general types of barley flour: coarse and fine. it contains alpha amylase, which helps to break down complex sugars and starch in the dough to simple sugars such as maltose, making them easier for yeast to feed on.
