Capital Punishment in “Two Fishermen”

Capital punishment is a brutal punishment towards those who break a certain law, the laws range from rape to murder, child rape, and treason. Although Capital punishment is terrible, Canada once supported it. The capital punishment started in the year 1865, it took place in upper and lower Canada, the crimes that you would be punished for is murder, treason, and rape. Canada stopped using capital punishment in 1976, to substitute capital punishment, Canada replaced it with life sentences without parole. In the story, “Two Fishermen” by Morley Callaghan the time it took place was during 1961 or 1962 due to the lynching that was only done for murder and no other punishment.

Thomas Delany did not deserve the form of capital punishment that he received. Thomas Delany was standing up and supporting his wife by killing the man who raped her. If Thomas Delany is guilty of murder, he should not be murdered in front of the general public, it is wrong to showcase an act like that. Whether or not it was legal, there is no valid reason for punishing Thomas Delaney publically for illegally murdering someone. The final reason why Thomas Delany did not deserve the capital punishment he got was because of how horrible the capital punishment is. I do not agree with capital punishment and I believe that even if someone were to do something gruesome and illegal, they should be punished, but not for the entire town to see.
