The amount of sugar in some products is atrocious. Its extremely surprising that the amount of sugar in a  kids sized coca-cola from McDonalds is almost equivalent to all the sugar a woman should have in a day. Its also something that worries me, the fact that a large sized coca-cola from McDonalds has 82g of sugar is unbelievable and potentially dangerous for your health.

February/March Lab Reflection

February/March Lab Reflection

I chose to reflect on the scones lab because it was a lab I really enjoyed. Not only were the scones delicious but we had the opportunity to use a new technique where we cut the butter into the dry ingredients to make the scones. The scones surprisingly cooked much quicker than expected and it was good that we checked on them halfway through because we had to take them out around half way through the recommended time that we were supposed to cook them for. Even with the shorter cooking time they turned out great and were cooked perfectly. During this lab our group worked together and helped each other when others were struggling. There were no issues and we all contributed equally to the lab. Even though we did not face any problems between our group we did have a few obstacles emerge throughout our lab. For example when we tried to put our two trays of scones in the oven we realized that both of the trays couldn’t fit on the same rack so we had to  put one tray on the bottom rack and the other on the top rack, we were going to switch the racks the trays were on halfway through the cooking time but the scones ended up cooking in half the time they needed so we just took them out of the oven. I could see myself doing this lab at home but the only thing I would change would be to just remove the raisins from the recipe and to maybe add blueberries instead because I do not like raisins. Overall this was my favourite lab so far and I will definitely try to make it at home.

Foods Journal – Consumable Waste:

Foods Journal – Consumable Waste:

When you walk into a grocery store it is almost impossible to avoid plastic and disposable packaging. Almost all food is packaged in disposable packaging for convenience and to reduce the cost due to disposable products such as plastic being inexpensive and easy to make. For example, cereal is usually packaged inside of a cardboard box which is recyclable, but then inside the cardboard box it is put into another plastic bag, which defeats the purpose of the recyclable box. The plastic bags are used to create a tighter seal to not expose the cereal to the air giving it a longer shelf life in the store and to keep it fresh for longer. The cardboard packaging is there not only to protect the plastic bag from tearing or breaking but also for marketing. It is much more likely for the consumer to purchase cereal in a colourful and fun looking box than cereal simply in a clear plastic bag. Packaging is also sadly deceiving to the consumer most of the time. There are many instances where the food purchased looks nothing like the food shown on the packaging whether it is a different size, shape or a completely different colour. Still these products are purchased due to the fact that on the packaging they look very desirable aside from the fact that this packaging will now be put into a land fill and discarded after one use. Even though plastic takes thousands of years to decompose we are still constantly and vigorously using it everyday to package almost everything. This needs to change soon because the amount of plastic on earth is constantly growing at an extremely fast rate. Recyclable, reusable and compostable packaging need to start being used . An alternative packaging for plastic must be found because plastics continue to distribute dangerous and harmful chemicals into the ocean and into the soil and it needs to come to an end.
