Core Competent Canadians

Question 1: What did you know about the Core Competencies before this activity? What did you learn?

Before this activity, I knew that the Core Competencies were split into 6 sections; Communication, Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking, Social Responsibility, Positive Personal and Cultural Identity, and Personal Awareness and Responsibility. I knew that they were recently added to the curriculum and I had to complete reflections for every class using the Core Competencies. After this activity, I learned that Core Competencies enhance your learning as you can reflect on what you did and how you can improve yourself. Since technology is constantly evolving and it is possible to search up the answer for almost anything now, provincial exams wouldn’t be of much use to students and wouldn’t assist them greatly when preparing for a career. Whereas, having strong Core Competencies will prepare you for any career, no matter what advances occur.

Question 2: How can your knowledge of the Core Competencies help you in your school life? Personal life?

The knowledge of Core Competencies leads to self-awareness as well as self-improvement. This is especially important in my school life when I’m learning in the classroom. It allows me to reflect on the work that I produce and improve myself while identifying my strengths and weaknesses. In my personal life, knowing the Core Competencies makes me more aware of how my actions affect others around me and how I can grow as a person. When it comes to finding a career in the future, I can apply my Core Competencies to whatever job I would like.

Data Visualization Assignment

Below I have included an image of my visualized data with the link to the original data website below it.

Percentage of 3rd Grade Children with Caries Experience in the U.S. between 1998 and 2017

Link to Data:

I chose to present my data in a poster to show the percentage of third-grade children with caries experience in the United States between 1998 and 2017. I made each tooth on the poster represent a state. Within each tooth, the state it represents is mentioned, as well and the percentage of third graders with caries experience in a specific year. From there, I matched the percentage of children with caries experience to the percentage of the tooth-colored grey. The greyer the tooth is, the more children in third grade have experienced caries in a certain state. The four teeth at the top of the poster with no grey, have no information given on caries experience on the website. Therefore, they are not colored at all. The background of my poster is red to represent the inside of the mouth. I believed that it was best to demonstrate this data in a poster because it is easy to read for my targeted audience. Since this is about caries experience in children, I believed that the poster would be the easiest way that children can read and interpret the data.
